I was aimlessly pressing my quilt strip and imagine my surprise when my iron got all gunky with what I thought was the fabric melting! Fortunately, only one strip was ruined on the edge.....I went back to the quilt shop to verify that this particular fabric was 100% cotton; it was. The only logical thought was that maybe the printed manufacturer name on the selvage was what "melted". I have not used my iron for anything but the cottons and my brand new ironing board cover (cotton) is now gunked up some. Anyone experience this? Thoughts?

Yes, I was going to cut the selvage off eventually but will make sure I do it first thing!

A few times I've had the beginning of a bolt which has been taped and have had tape residue that I didn't notice! That made a lovely mess.

A little off subject but just in case you didn't know, if your selvage has little squares of color running down the side? Those are the colors in your fabric. They are there for fabric matching and normally appear in order of the most common color to the least...some even have numbers in them to tell you which way the colors should be read.

I always wondered about that so you've answered a question for me that I hadn't even asked yet! I love this forum. I've learned so much.
Thanks

I always wash, dry and press my fabric before I start a project and I've never had anything like that happen. :nc: :nc:

I have begun to prewash my fabric now.. I purchased some fabric from Wally World and did not want to take a chance on bleeds so I used a Color Catcher sheet (I think that is the name) and boy, does that work! I had a couple of yards off dark reds and blues and just threw everything together and washed them. This product is amazing! It came out pink! The white selvages are still white!

Sandy, where did you get your 'color catcher' stuff? Is it a sheet, like a fabric softner sheet? I've never heard of anything like that, it sounds perfect for me, for those times the sweet man I married decides to attempt laundry and puts it all in together

You should be able to find them in the aisle with the fabric softner sheets.

After 32 years of marriage I've just about given up trying to teach my husband to do the laundry. I can have piles of sorted laundry across the room from each other and he'll still take a little from each pile and put them in the washer...the sheets might be a blessing.

Those sheets sound great, I'm going to look for them. Are there also sheets that will prevent acrylic from getting all beat out of shape when he puts in the wash on too high a cycle? And sheets to keep the fuzz off towels and socks from sticking to polar fleece and corduroy? And sheets to keep cotton and wool from shrinking when he throws them in a hot wash and cold rinse? Everything all in one sheet would be nice, please. LOL.

I've started using them recently for the same "a few from each pile" reason, but no, I don't think they're intended to fix all husband-quirks!!
