Hey everybody. Here is something to think about and I want your honest opinion on this. What do you think of having a stash challenge for the next month? Should I do this as in other years or is it a bit too close to holidays? The challenge would be to see who can sew up the most yardage. Opinions? MaryW

Hi Mary, I love those stash challenges, but personally, I am too busy to participate right now. However, there may be some members who are using their stash to sew up the holidays so they would probably be happy to have it count towards a challenge! Take care,

You could always offer it Mary, we have had a lot of new members join in the past year, it would be their first go. As a woman without stash in any way that compares to the rest of you I would be hard pressed to do this as well. I enjoy following them and seeing what other people come up with. How about a UFO challenge - haw many can you get finished off by Christmas! There must be loads of takers for that. love and kisses, Jan

I am trying to use up stash for gifts right now. My problem is remembering to count yardage or items. I will participate whenever it is held but my sewing time is limited by the whims of my 4 Yo DGS most days. so I don't get a lot done unless I let him play on the computer all afternoon & that isn't the best for him. Once in a while I let him stay as long as he wants, one day he was on for 3 hrs straight. By the time he goes home & I finish with dinner I am usually about to fall asleep in my chair. I love him to death but can't wait until Wed. I get a day off( Unless DD needs a ride to work.

I think it is a great idea, although I have a very limited stash, I have found that I have collected some fabrics for projects that haven't gotten completed! A couple of fabrics I was looking at for Christmas gifts, after that I was looking at making a plunge at really working on the fabrics after the holidays! See how many of those fabrics I can turn into the items they were intended to be when I bought them!

Mary, I love the idea but I'm stretched to the max right now with trying to stay up with everything I'm making for Christmas. I'd love something after the holidays though.

I think after xmas would be better for ME but I'm always up for some serious sewing (DH is going on course in Feb so that means no nagging if I'm sewing still at 10pm ) so... whenever!! (on course = military speak for going on a long extended training course elsewhere from home!) Jeanette

I'm not entirely sure what a stash challenge is. But if it requires getting a lot of things sewn up in a short amount of time, we should have done it last month. I had so many projects that HAD to be done last month that I just about went crazy. Anyway, if I could get a better idea of what the challenge entails then I could give an opinion. Sorry, I'm still new to the challenge thing and I'm not up on all the 'lingo' hehe. Charity |

A stash challenge entails using your stash for projects. Each project needs to have some stash fabric in it. I think the majority should be stash. You can buy lining interfacing notions etc. if you don't have it on hand but try to use what you have. We have done it 2 ways in the past that I remember (someone correct me if I am wrong). One way was to count each item made. The other was to count yardage. I personally thnk the 2nd way is fairer. but the problem is you have to measure the fabric before you start. I hope this clears it up for you. Barb

I am a newbie here but this sounds like it could motivate me to get a lot done before Christmas. When does it officially start and end? What are the official rules. The more I think about it I can't wait to give it a go...... |

If this involves actually measuring all the yardage in our stashes, No way I'll have time before the first of the year. It will be fairly easy, but time consuming, because I'm moving my stash - all of it, from a tiny bedroom to my new sewing space in what once was our attached garage. At least it's fairly neat and orderly. If this involves making things only from our stash, that's not a problem, although again, time is a limiting factor before the first of the year. Please give more details and a timeline. Thanks, Becky |

You use only fabric(s) from your "Stash" for each project that you do. When you start a project you measure the yardage of the piece you are using for THAT project, record it and submit it when the project is done. You do the same with each project after that. Mary, in the past, keeps a running total of everyones yardage used and posts it so we know who's been busy, busy, busy. The last Challenge Mary set a time peroid to do everything and at the end the one who used the most fabrics from their stash won a prize that she had picked out or was donated by someone. (These are VERY NICE PRIZES TOO! ) It is very fun to see and hear what everyone is making with their stash, and it helps get you through the Winter Months!!!!! |

I think I will go with the majority here. We will wait until January when things are not so busy. In the meantime, why not get some ideas for what you are going to make with your stash. Pin a little sticky note to the fabric as a reminder.

I don't wanna waaaaait!!!!! But since I have to wait, I am going to go through all my stash and get a total yardage. I'll probably get out from underneath the pile of fabric around the 1st of January. Mary, Can we have the challenge last for two months like the first one. That would be a great way to pass the winter duldrums of January and February. Gina

Question? When you measure your yardage do you also include the yardage for lining or just the main fabric? I'm with you Pudge I didn't want to wait either, I had so many things I was thinking I could hold off for until Dec, I have a laundry basket overflowing already, oh well, I'll just keep plugging away at Christmas stuff. Mary - you will post the rules etc right? I've never done a stash contest before Laura

Yes, I will post rules. You count every bit of fabric that is sewn from your stash. That means lining too. Bridesmom, you will have fun, I can almost guarantee it.

I am waiting eagerly for the rules and the starting date.. For Christmas, my DS & DIL gave me a gift of labor, for help in getting my clutter downsized so that I can get my house in some semblance of clean again.. We started in my BR and they finished last night.. Boy, what a difference! ! They want to start on the sewing room next, but I would really rather have a stash use contest first.. I think we would get the cleaning and organizing done quicker and easier, of course.. This way, I could sew, sew, sew, and then clean the rest and as we clean and sort, I can find what I need to start DGD sewing lessons. She is READY to learn, and eager to start.. If we are to have a contest starting soon, I can get them to do the LR and wait til the end of contest to do SR.. I'm ready right now, Miss Mary...

Oh posh, I am starting on the snowboard jacket now and so no contest for me!! I promised I'd get at it as soon as Christmas was over, so now I have to do it and it'll take weeks I think! Anyone know where I can buy that rubber coated elastic that the jackets have on the waist piece inside the jacket so they don't get snow up their backs?? I asked at all the boarding places this past week and they all have no idea - goggle, here I come (if I can think of what to call it)
