I would like to buy my 10 year old granddaughter a simple sewing machine for Christmas. Has anyone purchased one of the kids machines? I don't sew and so I have no idea what to look for.
Thanks!

Hi rubydoo,
Welcome to Sew Whats New.
By kids machines what are you exactly talking about? The ones they sell in fabric shops for 49.00? Or a lower priced model of a regular sewing machine?
My thoughts on these kids machine that I am thinking about is they are not worth it. My GD received one as a Christmas present and it is a piece of junk. I have heard others say the same thing about these machines. Just my own thoughts here, others I am sure will jump in and express their thoughts.

DD had one of the cheap toy ones. I would say don't buy it. All it did was frustate her. The thread tangled & they don't usually have a locked stitch so whatever you sew with it falls apart easily. I would buy a cheap used machine or a new one at Wal-Mart,Target etc. as long as you are there for backup instuctions. I got DD 1 the day after Thanksgiving last year for $79. It has 14 stitches & a buttonholer, it also came with a free case.

I Picked up one of those kids sewing machines for my trailer and that's what they are junk...my advice would be to buy a Kenmore or a Brother ...they would be a great machine...good prices to...I owned a Kenmore years ago and it was a great little machine...That is just my opinion...good luck.

I agree with everyone else...they're junk.

My 8yr old daughter LOVES her Stitch Pro Plus that she got as a gift, and it actually does a fairly decent straight stitch...BUT I have met freight trains that make less noise.

At that age I would recommend something like the Janome Gem Gold. mind you, this same child of mine is just as comfortable on the janome gem gold, the janome 6019, the brother, and the ancient kenmore that belonged to my mother as she is on the 'kids' machine. FWIW, I would probably opt for something functional that she won't outgrow.

Now I come from a different perspective altogether... I agree about this: The machines labeled for kids and sold in the kids toy catalogs are junk and will fail her sooner than later and are more likely to turn her away from sewing altogether. For $150-$200 you can get a reasonable machine that ought to last her for years, while she decides how much of a sewer she wants to become. BUT, I don't think a child needs to have her own sewing machine. Even though it would be a very kind and generous gift. I think a child needs access to one that she is welcome to use under a parent's supervision. So, if her mom already has one that she may use, then I vote for a gift certificate for sewing lessons at a sewing store. Or a really good sewing book that has projects of interest to her age group. Of a collection of materials--trims, some quilting fabric (what do they call them? fat quarters?), perhaps. Just throwing some out there for what it's worth. I _love_ the idea of encouraging a young person to sew!!!

I agree with everyone else the kids sewing machines are junk

Last xmas i brought a slightly used brother off of ebay for something like 50 bucks.....I did not want him to sew with my machine (fear that he would mess it up, selfishness or maybe a bit of both)....He was trilled and sews right next to me often....
