I had a Raggedy Ann doll made out of a man's work sock when I was a little girl. I would dearly love to be able to make one for my grand-daughter, but haven't seen a pattern anywhere. I bought a sock doll book a few years ago, but none of the patterns really come close. Has anyone made one of these? Judy Judy Sall Originals

So... here is my sad story. I sent off for the Raggedy Ann sock doll pattern, and discovered it called for a tube sock for the doll. The only way I can find tube socks is in giant, economy size packages. Since I only plan to make one doll, I went to the fabric store and bought Simplicity Pattern 9447, which is for Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls. Everything has gone smoothly until I got to the part where I need to make the yarn wig for the doll. I have now gone thru two attempts, and it's not coming out right! The pattern instructions don't tell me whether to hand or machine stitch the yarn to the wig base; the yarn ends up bunched up on one side of the base instead of evenly spaces out over the base. And the picture really isn't very clear. Is there anyone out there who has made dolls with yarn hair, who can give me some pointers? Time is running out, and I really want it to come out nice for the GD! Thanks, Judy Judy Sall Originals

Judy This is all hand sewing. When I make yarn hair I sew it right onto the head with a big needle and wool OR lie the wool loops over the head to get the hair where I want it and pin it while I fool around with the arrangement. When I sew directly onto the head I sew in loops and then either keep short loops or longer loops which I cut in the end. It has been a long time since I made a raggety ann doll but it if I recall, I threaded a lot of long long wool stitches down the centre of the head, front to back, then stitched the hair (loops) around the face and back of head with ordinary thread so that the head was covered. If the hair isn't thick enough you can always stitch more loops. If you want to try again for a pattern try searching on ebay for "doll patterns". There is someone in Ontario that has copies of sooo many doll patterns and at reasonable prices. I have lost the address now, but ended up buying 6 doll patterns. Some of the patterns are very old and there are some sock dolls (I got an eskimo pattern sock doll). The copies are really clear. Good luck with the hair. Why is it always the last step that takes the most time!? *~*~*~* Nancy*~*~*~* " I try to take one day at a time - but sometimes several days attack me at once."

Judy, watch garage sales & second hand stores like Goodwill. I see tube socks there a lot for a quarter or less.
