Does anyone know whether the foot controls of machines are interchangable (ie. the power foot that makes the machine run)? I am finding the foot controller on my newest machine is hard on my back when I am sewing for a long period of time. My first Elna had a knee controller to run the machine and I loved it. Several years ago I believe I saw an advertizement for a knee control for a machine, but I can't recall whether it was machine specific. I am sewing on a Janome 6260.
Thanks for any info?

Don't know about the knee controller but I don't think the foot pedals are interchangeable. At least on my 3 machines they are not-they have different plug ends for the machines.

Many are interchangable. The cord is the big difference for most. There are only two knee controls on the market that I am aware of. They work on about 90% of the machines. However, todays knee controls require that the machine be in a cabinet. What brand and model of machine do you have?

The knee controller I have on my older singer, mounts the foot pedal inside the cabinet and the knee controller then presses on the foot controller. You might be able to keep your foot control if it is similar in size/shape. I don't know if your is. Check your local thrift shops or used furniture shops for an old sewing table that has a need controller already built in. If the foot controller is giving you back pain, try raising or lowering your chair to a better height, also some of that rubbery shelf liner underneath the pedal and your foot will keep the pedal from moving around which help too.

Some machines now have a control that can be purchased that will allow you to sew with button control at the machine. This is being used for people who are handicapped. You might consider asking your dealer about this type of control for your machine. The people I know who use them love them.

I recently broke my Bernina 930 foot controller, I cut off the foot and spliced a foot from an old Kenmore on to the cord. This works, but not well. It doesnt have speed control and the needle up and down feature doesn't work, so I'm looking for a "new" foot control. While looking I found Bernina sells a hand controller, not of interest to me, but it might work for you.
