Hello- I have decided to begin quilting because I recently found out I am pregnant with our first baby. Eventually I want to make a quilt for the baby with a "before you were born" theme I would like it to have some pictures and fun stuff on it to show baby what life was like before he/she joined us. I know this will be a complicated project so I need a starting project that will point me in the right direction. Thank you for any advice or tips on getting started. |

Hi moni1221, There are some quilting lessons on this site. Quilting Lessons (http://sew-whats-new.com/CMS/index.php?option=content&task=category§ionid=2&id=7&Itemid=32) That would be a good place to start. I am new to quilting and I started with small projects...pot holders, small wallhangings, and later, baby quilts. I am now working on the Advent Quilt that is posted on this site. Once you get a basic understanding of how quilts are made, it won't be long before you start thinking of all the possibilities! Take care,

Hi Moni1221. Welcome to SWN!!! And congrats on the new baby to be!! Babies are so much fun! In addition to Donna's suggestions-which are really good because the directions are simple and basic that we have posted here-you might try looking for a book in your local fabric/quilt store or even a place like Barnes & Noble on memory quilts-or even google and find out what you come up with. Considering a memory quilt is what you want to do you might do as Donna suggested and start with a pot holder or something simple and work your way up- perhaps do a memory pillow with pictures before tackling your quilt. Hardest thing I found about quilting is picking out the fabric! LOL Let us know how you do and if you have any more questions feel free to ask-there is a wealth of knowledge around here! again, Welcome and Congrats! Lyn

Oh, that'll be a nice project! Good for you. I think the first quilted project I completed was a small wall hanging for my cousin's baby's nursery. Here are a few free patterns for other baby items, just to get your creative energy going. baby patterns (http://www.sewing.org/enthusiast/html/baby.html) Enjoy!

Congratulations Moni1221! I'm sure the baby will really appreciate the quilt when he/she gets older...it will be a great keepsake. I just started sewing a few months ago and my first project was a wall hanging quilt - so if i can do it, it can't be that hard! There are a lot of great ideas for beginner quilt projects on the 'net: sewing.about.com Sewing Machine Manufacturer Websites: eg. www.pfaffusa.com, www.husqvarnaviking.com/us/ If you have the time, you should drop by your local quilting/sewing store - they often have individual patterns or 'kits', some geared to beginners. I used a 'square dance' pattern along with a couple of basic reference books and they got me off to a good start! |
