If you can help this lady, please post here.

Hi Mary,
Have you had any tips on cleaning a quilt or quilts that are quite old, some with cigarette discoloration? Or where to take them for appraisel and cleaning. Thanks in advance.

The first thing I'd do is vacumn the quilt with a nylon stocking over the hose. If you wash it DON't put it in the washer even on delicate. Fill the bathtub with cool water & soap that is for quilts. Let it soak awhile, then gently with you hands push up & dowm , DON't rub or scrub. Let soak some more. Don't lift the quilt out but empty that water & either repeat the same process or rinse. Push down to get as much soap out & clear water as possible. Continueing the clean water process as many times as it takes. Squeeze out all the water you can by pushing with the flat of you hands with quilt in the tub. NO LIFTING OF THE QUILT. Ease a large sheet under the quilt to lift it out of the tub. You'll need help for doing this. Lay it out carefully on a porch or outside in a shaded area & take towels to push down on the quilt gently to get as much water out as you can. Lay another sheet down to carefully lay it on & put another sheet on top of the quilt so nothing will get on it. It will take quite qwhile for it to dry. Don't put it in the direct sun. I would try to have it appraised before I tried to clean it. Get a good quilt appraiser, some don't know squat about quilts but think they do. I hope this helps but it is a lot of work to clean one. Maybe a quilting guild would know a better way & who to talk to about the appraisal. Worth a shot.
