Any comments on theses? Wal Mart sells them. I think one draw back is the size of embroidered area? Is it worth the money to buy one? :nc:

Is it the p-180D? That's what I have, it is an embroidery only machine with a 4x4 inch (10x10 cm) area. I've had mine for 3 1/2 years now, recently had a problem but it just required a cleaning and resetting of one of the laser sights. (the thing has laser sights!!!) I like it, it does what I need it to do which is mainly kid outfit embelishment and putting NAMES on all belongings with the potential to be lost at school.

Good things... disney designs :bluewink: , portable, workhorse, can sew on my regular machine while it is embroidering( this is a big factor for me)
Bad things... small area (but I did buy the multihoop which allows you to embroider separate designs on a 4x8 area without rehooping, it DOES NOT allow you to use designs larger than 4x4, ie 5x7 designs), noisy, and the disney cards are extra pricey, no low bobbin indicator :bluesad: ,

but if you are just breaking into embroidery this is a good place to start and the price is reasonable, but if you buy at walmart you don't get dealer backup and lessons. The machine is pretty basic and lessons aren't really needed but a class on embroidery in general (threads, stabilizers etc) would be useful.

Geez, thanks for all the helpful info. I was thinking of doing squares and things on blocks of white cotton for quilting, personalizing gifts like pillowcases and stuff.

I may buy the Disney machine and get some skill with it and wait for a time when I can get better.

Anyway, Thanks for your info and time!

mommie dionne.. a word to the wise... if you're truly thinking about an embroidery machine and want to save some money.... look into a used 6500 or 8500, either one of which has the 5x7 stitch area...(you can usually pick one up for less than 1K) believe me.... if you start out with the 4 x 4 , within a very short time you will find yourself dreaming of the bigger stitch field... trust me.. been there, done that... :bluewink: if you can afford to go with the bigger stitch field, do it,,, you'll save money in the long run...

justmy 2 cents...

The White 3300 is basically the same Brother made machine as some of the Brother stand alone embroidery machines and comes with a Taste of Disney card and also the Alphabet card. The Simplicty machine is also the same machine as is one of Babylocks and I believe one of the Bernina's. It seems they are all the same Brother made. Anyone interested in purchasing cards for their machine will find from the different sites on line you can purchase cards that fit all of these machines except for the Disney cards that are for the Disney machines only. The White 3300 from what I am told cannot use any of the other Disney cards except the Taste of Disney card that it came with but can use some other Brother cards. Each brand also has it's own selection of cards. Not all Brother cards can be used in the other brands but many of the different brand name cards are interchangeble among the different brand name machines. If buying on line the site usually posts which cards can be used with the different brands. If buying a stand alone machine they do vary in price, may vary in built in designs and are really workhorses.

My dh got me the Disney machine for Christmas last year, and I do love it! It has been easy to learn, done some wonderful embroidery. But I agree with everyone, I already wish I could do a larger field ! :bg:

A lot of people with larger, more expensive machines purchase the Disney machines for the designs.

If you purchase a machine from Wal Mart, my dealer says that the Brother (he is Brother/Bernina) dealers are allowed to service the machines and honor the company warranty. If they are purchased online, there is no warranty unless the seller will give you one.

Hi there, I'm actually new to this forum :) I have a Brother SE 270D which I bought refurbished from www.allbrands.com. I think it is an excellent machine for someone who is just starting out. It has been tons of fun making xmas gifts for my friends and family this year and I'm also enjoying sewing items for my daughter. I have found the stitch quality and ease of use to be excellent on my machine. If you have extra money, buy the nicest machine you can afford. If however, like me, you are on a budget, you will not be dissappointed by a Brother Disney machine.

Walmart also sells the Singer Futura (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=3429493) . It has a larger 4.5 by 6.75 hoop. I do not have it yet but this is the one I plan to get once I figure out where to put it.

I bought the disney brother from walmart. It is fine for what I use it for and while I have longed for a larger field at times, I couldn't justify the extra money for the use i get out of it. I have the Ultimate box with the blank card, and with a little searching you can find more than enough designs for anything!! Most designs you find free online allow you to fit them to the smaller field. I have had mine for about a year and have had no problems once I figured out all (most!!) of the tricks to stabilizing and hooping. Nancy Zieman has a great beginner book on machine embroidery, you can order it at the Nancy's Notions web site. I highly recommend doing some reading about how to embroider along with the practice!!
