Hi everyone,

Don't laugh but, what is a stay stitch? I have always wondered what this stitch is and it's purpose. Do you use the widest stitch there is for it?

Thanks.

Shalynn,
We have all been there. Never be afraid to ask a question.. Stay Stitching is usually done to keep a surface from stretching out of shape. (usually a neckline, because it is cut in a curving line, and off grain). This is to be stitched with a regular length straight stitch, and you must guide the fabric very easily (no pulling or pushing) so that it keeps its shape and does not getstretched out of shape and not fit the piece it is attached to.
We are glad you are here.. I've been sewing 56 or 57 years and I ask questions here frequently..

Thank you very much Leapfrog! You couldn't have explained that any clearer for me to understand...

I have been sewing for a good 6 months now.. I took a sewing class (1 year) in High School and it stayed there.. Now, 13 years later, I'm picking it back up and am very excited to sew, sew, sew! Weird, but I daydream about what I'm going to sew.. even think about the construction while at work.. :bluesmile

Thanks again!

Also, the pattern usually shows an arrow for which direction to sew, such as in a neckline, you sew from one side to the middle, then from the other side to the middle. Once you understand what purpose the staystitch has, then it makes sense why you are going in a specific direction.
