:nc: I have recently been wondering why there is not available an embroidery only machine with a larger field than 4x4? :bang:
I don't have the money or inclination to spend $4000 up for a combination machine at this point (I have a Bernina 160 which is amazing and a brother 180D and a Viking 910 serger plus 2 antique Singers) but would not mind upgrading my embroidery only machine but the only option appears to be to buy a machine with many features I don't need.
I like having 2 separate machines as it means I can sew while the 2nd machine embroiders. Sewing time is limited in my house so multi tasking rules :re:
Any thoughts? (or reasons as to why my dream machine does not exist.)

Chrys-do you own this machine? How is it? I'm with you Jeannette, if I put the money into an embroidery machine I want one that just embroiders, I have enough regular machines and I'd like to be able to do both at the same time.

I agree that if you have to step upgrade, the embroidery only machine would be a reasonable solution. 5X7 Isn't bad but you've got to think that the companies are almost toying with us by not giving us the really large sizes in an embroidery only machine so that they can sell the big ticket items. The largest embroidery only machine that I know about is the Brother PR600 and it's companion Babylock machine that sells for about 6000 up depending on what necessary accessories you get with it. THere just doesn't seem to be anything between the Janome and it's companion Bernina machine and this really expensive machine.

There is a rumor out that Brother is getting ready to introduce a new embroidery only machine with a "larger" hoop but considering that their hoops are currently 4x4, who knows what that means?

I recently purchased a Janome 300E and I love it. I got mine for $1100 (new)from a local dealer. I wanted a stand-alone embroidery machine and this one comes with some great features. First of all it comes with two hoops, a 4x4 and a 5x7; a free arm which is great for embroidering on shirts, totes, etc; has many built-in designs and even has a neat monogramming feature. What I especially like is the ease of transferring designs from computer to machine. It uses a flash card which can hold dozens of designs. The flash card is so much easier to use than transfer boxes. I still have my Brother PE-150. I wouldn't give that up, and it is great to have a spare. My only wish is that I had more time for this addicting hobby!

I was thinking about this and I may wait to see what brother comes out with b/c... All my stuff is *.pes including my digitizing programme (PE Design 4, old I know but it does what I need so far) and it would seem like such a waste to have to start over in a new format.

clarification... as I understand it... the stitch field on the 300E is 5 x 7.. the only way you can anything larger is with the gigahoop...

Personally, I think that staying within your format is a good idea. I really recommend that if you start at a lower level, buy and plan as though you were going to purchase the TOL machine in that line. If you don't like the TOL, I wouldn't buy. The reason? You will aquire software and designs that are compatable with that format. If somewhere along the way you have a duel purpose machine, you may a lot of feet and attachments. Over time you will have a lot of money invested and the machine will only be a fraction of the cost. Some day you may advance to a higher level machine. You'll loose less money in the trade up if your machine is all that you have to replace.

I know, the software alone is a small fortune and I do have the multihoop for the brother machine and that helps alot with planning larger design areas. Plus... this is a hobby I don't sew for anyone else etc and find it a bit hard to justify upgrading my embroidery stuff at this time :bg: . But I guess one can always dream. I saw a ULT for $250 on ebay but the auction has a way to go yet :bluewink:
