My granddaughter is 4 ft tall, weighs about 45 pounds and needs a size 7 for length, but a size 5-6 to fit around. She is now out of the patterns that come in sizes 3 to 8...I just bought a size 7 for her Christmas dress. Her mom will be sending me her measurements, but not sure how much to allow for a good fit and letting her move around. Any help will be great.

OK...I'm a little confused. Do you have a pattern for her dress or did you buy the dress outright?

Are you asking about ease in the garment? They suggest that you take it up at least one level for a child over an adult. Children need more ease in their garments then adults as they do allot more moving, jumping, running then we do :bg: If she is still in a size 6 you could use the 6 just adding length where needed. Or were you going to a 7 for growing room? I'm really not sure exactly what you need? I'll tell you I have a plus size daughter, if I use patterns I have use the multi sizing lines, adjusting as I go. For instance I may need a small shoulder line, armhole, neckline, but a medium body width, going to a small length. There are more challenges, alterations, & adjustments I've learned for the plus size kiddo, but I know those aren't your issue :bluewink: but think about using those multi lines & adjusting if you need.

Ok...sorry I didn't get back to you sooner...it's been busy here. I know exactly what you mean about needing a different height and width size. As it turns out my daughter needs about a 5 width and a 7 height (I still have to add a couple of inches of length on pants to a 7 though) What I have found is that I can cut the pattern out at the 5 width and the 7 length and it usually turns out fine. Of course I have the added advantage of calling my daughter into the room and seeing just how well it does fit before I finish sewing it. I would suggest you cut the pattern according to her measurements. Most patterns have the 'finished size' on the back below the fabric requirements. Add an inch or two for movement and sew to that size. If it turns out that she needs a size 5 around and a 6 in length or whatever, then just cut it that way. Be careful around the armholes though, it can get confusing as to which size to cut there since part of it is width and part of it is height. Personally, I would err on the side of caution and go a little bit larger than her measurements, a dress that is just a tad bit too big will be fine but if it's too small, then it's uncomfortable.

Also, if you want to reuse the pattern, you can always use tissue paper to trace off the zise you need and transfer all your pattern markings, it's not that hard and if you decide to make another one, you won't have ruined your original pattern.

Hope this helps, good luck and let us know how it turns out.
