Hi, I'm very new to sewing & am attempting to make a roman blind. My question is what is the best stitch to sew on the ring tape? And is there a trick to sewing straight lines with it. Thanks Annmarie

Hi and welcome to the boards. I haven't made Roman Shades but if you are talking about the rings that come on a tape and you sew the tape to the fabric, I think I'd use a straight stitch on the sewing machine. As for straight, I think you would just have to measure and mark to get as straight as you can.

I'm sure someone who has made these will probably have a better idea than I do but I do hope you enjoy the boards!

Thanks for the welcome Lyn! I sewed one on last night it come out ok. I just have to practice getting used to moving the fabric so the lines are straight. What I did find out is that when the foot comes to a ring on the tape it sorta shifts the tape a bit. I'll just have to go a bit slower at that point. Thanks Again!! Annmarie

Use your zipper foot for sewing the tape. It helps where the rings are. They have a glue stick that helps positions your trims to the material to keep it in place. It washes out and does no harm to your needle or machine. You may want to give this a try to help keep everything going straight.

When I have made roman shades, I have found that I get nicer results if I buy the loose rings and sew them on individually. Just measure across carefully so that the rings line up. Using individual rings avoids having lines of vertical stitching going down the shade. Also, if the shade is not super heavy, the tape can be thicker than the shade itself (very icky looking!). Hand sewing the rings doesn't actually take any longer than messing with the long pieces of tape does.

Happy sewing,
Debbi

You can always make a chalk line or a line from air erase pen to line up your tape or your rings.

Hi I was wondering if you knew the name of the glue stick or the maker of it. Thanks everyone for the great tips! Annmarie

edited--Sorry found that Clover makes a fabric glue stick. I'll have to see if we have it where I work. Thanks a bunch everyone!
