The sweater I am working on has the following for the sleeve directions;

on smaller needles cast on 33 stitches. Rib stitch for 1 1/2 " then change to larger needles.
On larger needles do the follfowing:
Row #1 - knit all stiches
Row #2 - pattern stitches
then back to row one and keep repeating the two rows.

Now here is the kicker, every "5" rows I am to add on 1 stitch on each end. I do this for 11 times. So I add a stitch to each end for 5 rows, skip 5 rows, then add on for 5 rows, etc? IE rows 1-2-3-4-5 would have a stitch added to each row, 6-7-8-9-10 would not, 11-12-13-14-15 would, etc. Am I reading this right?

www.straw.com go to Crystal Palace Yarns, then look for the Merino Frappe Cloud Cardigan under "free patterns"

I would read that as adding a stitch to each end every 5 rows. Because a sleeve slowly widens, it is more logical to do it that way. So you increase each end on row 1, do 2,3,4,5,6 regular, increase on row 7, do 8,9,10,11,12 regular. You should be increasing only on your knit row, otherwise you will throw your pattern off.

I tried that the first time, but came out with 55 stitches total after 11 times. What did I do wrong?

You're right, you didn't make a mistake, its a confusing pattern. I neglected to count the stitches you'd be adding. If you added 2 stitches every 5 rows for 11 times you'd add 22 stitches plus your original 33 for 55 stitches. But if you add 2 stitches to each row for 5 rows 11 times you get 110 stitches plus your 33 original. You need to add 55 stitches, so that makes me wonder if you are only supposed to be adding 1 stitch at the end of each row 55 times (5x11). But then I wonder how your pattern will work out. Can you do a little mini sleeve, and try it, rather than doing the whole thing and having to rip it out again??

I am really struggling with this, I keep going back and re-reading the instructions! To keep your pattern in sync, you need to be adding 2 stitches to each end of the knit row, that way when you come back with the pattern row, you aren't off by 1 stitch. Unless someone comes up with a brain wave, I'd be tempted to increase by 2 stitches every knit row until I had a total of 88 stitches, then just continue on until I got my length. I hope I haven't confused you more than ever :nc:  :nc:  But I'd still do a little test swatch to see if it works.

Sewhappie

I scrolled to the sketch of the sleeve and it appears to me that the increase would be done on each row for 55 rows (every 5 rows, 11 times) giving 88 stitches total. I took the liberty of writing for a more clear explanation of the directions but not sure if I will hear back from them.

I think it means to increase one stitch on each end, every 5th row, 11 times... rows 5, 10, 15, etc. up to the 55th row. You would be adding 22 stitches to the original 33, for a total of 55. I think 88 is a missprint. If you end up with 55 stitches, you should have the 20 inches required for the top of the sleeve...see the picture with the pattern. The gauge is 11 stitches = 4 inches, so 55 stitches should equal 20 inches.

Hope this helps.
Take care,
Donna

You will increase every 5th row, for 11 times.
so rows 5, ,10, 15, etc. until you have added (11*2=) 22 more stitches for a total of (33+22)=55 stitches.

Okay, i just heard from Crystal Palace Yarns, IT IS a mistake in the directions on their part, the pattern should read 55 stitches not 88!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Magot,

That is what I started out with, I used a marker to show me where my pattern started and it was working out just fine!! BUT then I saw tht it was to be 88 stitches SO I ripped it all out and started over trying different ways but nothing was working. I have since gone back to the first plan and then heard from Crystal Place Yarns midway through it AGAIN!!!! Now I know that I wasn't going crazy and that I'm on the right path.

THANKS TO all of YOU who lent a helping hand, you have once again shown me that ALL OF YOU are the best!!!!!!!
