My son wants a snowboarding jacket, we've found a pattern he likes which is suitable but he wants vents under the arms that open/close with zippers. The jacket will be lined with a microfleece, so, when I put these zipper vents in, do I put a mesh inside them like a little pocket. Any ideas or can you steer me in the right direction?? I can't seem to find a pattern for what I want. The pattern I did find is from Storm Mountain Patterns off of www.therainshed.com. which has some great patterns.

Hmmm...Have you seen any jackets that have the armpit vents before? I think a good study of one will probably help you a lot. I just went through our coat closet and found a few with vents. Here's what I picked up: 1) The ones we have that have both a windbreaker and a fleece layer are really 2 seperate jackets that zip into each other. None of them had both layers sewn together. You can open the under-arm zipper for both of them in order to catch a breeze. 2) My husband's favorite is the one with a 2 way zipper--in the armpit, the zipper has 2 tabs, so he can pull up if he wants or pull down, or pull a little each way if he chooses. I don't know. The man enjoys his options. :) 3)The most common zipper insertion used was lapped. 4) None of them had a mesh insert. It's open air once you open the zipper. You can reach right in and tickle someone throught the hole. 5) The zipper goes from mid torso, through the lowest part of the armscye, all the way to mid-arm.

I'll try and take a few pics and see if that gets you going inthe right direction.

Unfortunately, my sewing folder doesn't make it easy for me to display just the one or two pics I want to. Gotta take the baby with the bathwater. Bear with me through the other stuff. The last 3 pics are jacket details and are annotated.

That was really really helpful! Thanks so much Andrea. Now I just have to get him to the fabric store to look at fabric. I'm kind of hoping he'll hold off until January, even though the mountain is open here already - very early. But since he is heading to Whistler for boarding over New Years here's betting he will want it for then. I guess I'd better get on his case, cause I think this will be a major job!

Certainly not for the faint of heart! Does your fabric store carry outerwear fabrics? The better (non-megachain) store in my area does have a table of outerwear/performance fabrics, but it's usually stuff that's good for an inner layer or maybe for sports shorts. I think denver fabrics (check online) has a selection of waterproof, breathable fabrics, and there may be some other sources. You might be able to get him to look around online with you and at least gte an impression, then you could buy on your own. Good luck! I can't wait to see how this turns out!

Bridesmom - I don't know where you are in BC, but THE place to get both outerwear fabric and information in BC is www.sundroptextiles.com. I have found they are one of the best and most helpful shops in BC. They are located on Kingsway in Port Coquitlam and are available all over the province (telephone number is on website). They carry the mesh and could probably talk you through the process. The fabrics aren't cheap (what is these days!) but are very strong. There are fabric choices; again the staff can help you. Having said that, you may want to compare prices with ready made jackets as there seems to be a lot on sale right now. I did comparisons when my children were little and sometimes handmade snowsuits were cheaper and sometimes not, but I bet those handmade ones are still making the rounds, 30 yrs later. Mountain Equipement Coop is one such place but so is Sears.
In some ways I find making coats and jackets less time consuming than making a blouse or dress.

Good Luck
Nancy

Oh Nancy, you know exactly where I was going!! I had heard of Sundrop Textiles before and Mary mentioned them once in a newsletter. Their prices aren't really too bad considering the jacket won't require yards and yards. I guess we will find out once we start looking at it. The jackets he's been looking at are Burton so of course $$$$$. And the cheaper jackets don't have the features he is looking for, so in the long run it may be worth the time and effort. Besides, since I made his sisters wedding dress, I've been feeling a bit guilty that I haven't done something special for him, boxers and flannel pj pants just don't cut it! There's also a place I found on line - Rainshed.com which has patterns and fabric as well. But I think we'll probably stay with Sundrop because they are right close by, about 1/2 way between his place and ours. Being that he is 6'2 he does find it hard to get a good fit, if it fits in the arms, the chest size is huge. This way I can alter it to fit him. And there is a little place in Mission called Hooge's Fabrics that also has some really nice and different types of fabric, he is also very knowledgeable about fabric as well. I may check him out too.

There is a book titled Sewing Outdoor Gear by Rochelle Harper. It has a whole chapter on vents. Super photos and step by step instructions.

Wow, you guys are awesome! I just found that book on sale at the place that I am buying the pattern, RainShed Inc in Oregon (on line) so when they open up this morning I will phone and order both the book and the pattern. Then Thursday, off to Sundrop to look at fabric, and a quick stop at Fabricana on the way home if there's time.

If you make any amount of outerwear at all, this book is invaluable. I have one and it is amazing how much information I have used from it. Books are so expensive but this one is worth every penny.

Well, we did our trip to Sundrop and I must say I am a bit disappointed at the selection of fabric and the help I got. I must have gotten someone who was either new or just not a helpful type. So on my way back home I stopped in at Fabricana and found almost the same fabric at 1/2 the price, right color too. But decided to wait and called Textile Outfitters in Calgary - she was really helpful in explaining the types of fabric, why you would use each one - I was really impressed. But their fabric is really expensive $42/m!! I ordered some swatches as well as a pattern for mittens (which was $5 cheaper than at Sundrop). And - the Sewing Outdoor Gear book - well I got it on line for $11.49, it was $39.99 at Sundrop! Was I happy about that! Now have to wait for DS to come out and see my swatches, then we can make some decisions. I'm a little concerned about his color choices, he wants red, yellow and brown, (his pants are brown) I can see the red and yellow, but with brown?? I can't even find a good brown color (lots of putty color). There's also a local guy who sells all sorts of fabric, but he is in the middle of moving his store, so he's not even open right now  I'll still go back to Sundrop, I think they deserve another chance and they do have some nice fleeces and cotton knits!

Sorry about your experience at Sundrop, BridesMom, especially after I recommended them. I did run into one of their staff at a sewing show once who wasn't much help but figured working at a sewing show must be very time consuming.

Your experiences are a warning to all of us to not take the first price we see. Good luck sewing the jacket.

Glad to learn that I am not the only one who has had a less than satisfactory experience with Sundrop.

Andrea, I have the fabric, but I didn't buy enough of the coat color, we are doing three colors, a khaki dark green, yellow and a deep blue. The lining will be a gorgeous spandex fleece stuff. I got the pattern in the mail today,so tonight I am going to lay it all out and figure out how much more of the green I will need. I got myself so confused with him trying to figure out what colors he wanted where that I bought too much yellow and not enough green - go figure. Still trying to find out what kind of needle to use, and looking for the seam stop stuff somewhere here in the lower mainland so I don't have to order that on line as well. Hope to get cutting it tomorrow night.

Sounds like a fun project :) Maybe with the extra yellow, you could make him a pouch to keep his accessories--gloves, scarf, hat--together when he's not wearing them. Or mittens, if you have extra fleece to line them.

We already have the pattern for overmitts which I will make in the yellow as well as black fleece mitts for inside them. And I also bought a pattern for a snowboard bag, that I will make in the green for his birthday in June cause I'm thinking this jacket is going to take me a month to do after looking at the pattern and buying 10 zippers for the pockets, vents, etc. I hate putting in zippers, but I bet I'll be really good at it by the time this is done!

Don't you guys have snow in June???? I thought everybody got snow in June except those southern gals - well, I'm flabbergasted.

I figured his birthday was as good a time as any for the bag, I'll be ready to tackle another huge project by then I hope, otherwise, it'll be a very early Christmas present next year.
