This is what I'm making for our 4 young nephews. I found it on another board and thought it was too cute not to share with all of you.

You make a pillow case from a Christmasy print fabric, fold and put into a small bag (like a zip-lock) and print this poem to attach to the top:

MAGIC PILLOWCASE

Dec. 1st is a magical time
With all sorts of colors, ribbons, and rhymes.

Sugarplum fairies will dance in your head,
If you put this special pillowcase on your bed.

The reason is special
As you will see

It's that it has been dusted
With Christmas Fantasy.

Visions of candy canes, Santa and treasures
Will fill each dream with sweetness and pleasures.

When the time comes for it to be washed,
Do it quickly so no magic is lost!

I made 2 of them early Thursday AM and took with me to our Thanksgiving gathering.. Gave one to DGD and one to her cousin. (other side of family)..
They were so excited.. The cousin (kindergarten age) told her Mom she wanted to go home and put it on her pillow and then come back for the Dinner.. My GD loved hers also.. All the ladies thought it was the cutest Christmas Idea in a very long time.. Thanks , Bama.. I'm gonna make some more for friends at church..

I just have to share this.. Maybe you all know this, but it is news to me, and I got excited about it.. I wanted to print more copies of the poem and I could not remember which thread it was on, so I used the 'search' item for the first time ever on this site. When it answered with it, the words Magic and Pillowcase were in red..I LOVE it, and printed it that way.. Maybe you all knew that, but it is worth repeating anyway.. Enjoy ! !

That is just one of the five I have so far. Thesea re easy to do. And so much fun. I made a updated version for the adult also.

that poem reads

december first starts a magical time,
with all kinds of colors, ribbon and thyme,
then the day draws near and yu are nto done,
with all those gifts for everyone.

So you hurry and shop and sew and craft,
to finish those gifts and get them packed,
When time is all gone, and you have done your best,
Lay your head on this pillowcase,
AND GET SOME REST!!!!!

Our nephews loved their pillowcases so much that my SIL says they don't want to take them off of their beds now that Christmas is over.
I'm going to make them some Valentine pillowcases and then some for Easter.
Anyone have a poem to go with magic pillowcases for holidays other than Christmas?

Thank you for the great idea. I bought more fabric at WalMart the other day sso I can make some for next year.

I just bought 49 yards of Christmas fabric for 75% off. I sold 6 magic pillowcases the week before Christmas and could have sold alot more if I had enough fabric. I'll be ready next year. :bluesmile
My daughter says I have a serious addiction, but I couldn't pass it up. I suggested checking out another WalMart but dd rolled her eyes. I'll be passing by another one tomorrow, so I'll HAVE to stop. :monkey:

Bama that is a steal. I wish I could do something like that I never find anything good and when I happen to find a good deal I'm flat broke and can't buy anything. :monkey:

Let us know how the pillow cases are coming along. I think I'm going to start sewing for next year in the summer months so it's not so stressful this year.

Ladies, can you point me to a site or provide directions to making a pillow case? Was this a standard pillowcase or a smaller "travel size" one? I'm going through my fabric stash and probably have 49 yards of Christmas print and might do this for next year.

Thanks in advance,

Peggy

You can copy one, they are so simple you do not need a pattern.. Just measure one you have that is the right size.. Only 2 pieces of fabric are required.. Takes maybe 15 minutes if you are slow to sew one together.. I intend to make some to sell next year.. The few I made this year were big hits.. I don't have measurements to give.. I always grab a pillow case from the linen closet on my way to sewing room..

That's what I did. I copied one I already had. It takes one yard per standard size pillowcase, allowing for a nice wide hem. I folded it over, cut a little from the selvages, and sewed down one side and end. I put a decorative stitch with contrasting thread along the hem.
Next year I plan to make a few king-sized sets to give as gifts to hubby's brothers and their wives using the non-juvenille prints. I'll probably make us a set too with a pretty poinsettia print I got.

My grands are into flames. I made several with flames for the pillow case and black check for the hems. Sort of like NASCAR pillowcases. :nah: The problem with making cases is that a lot of my standard pillow cases are different sizes and they are suppose to be standard. I guess it's the quality of the case.

Well, that was so simple I should have thought of it. My daughter reminded me I got pattern for a pillow case from "that fabric store" Mom...remember when you made us watch them make it and it was boring!

However, they are SO excited, because I brought my machine back up from the basement and set it up. So maybe I'll pick up some kiddie fabric and make some for them to use now.

Thanks ladies!

I make mine on my serger, so it takes maybe 10 minutes if I'm working slow that day.. Takes longer to cut the fabric than to serge the 2 seams.. I'm counting back and side as one seam, and doubled hem as the other..

Dont' you just love a serger. I love my new serger. Now if we could just figure out an easy way to measure and cut out the cases.

I made three of those rice packs today out of flannel. Then I sat in my lounge chair and treated myself to some relaxation. With the kids all scattered I'm under so much stress worrying about all of them that I needed a day like today. I'm glad I found those patterns for the rice packs yesterday. Came in handy

I have an easy way to cut out pillow cases...I take a 'store' bought one that fits my pillows. fold my washed and ironed fabric, lay the 'store' case on the fabric FOLD, cut what I think is a good seam. 3/8 or more sides only, cut 4-5" for the hem, serger the sides and the hem, starch iron hem down and do a decorative stitch from one of my machines....

You can make 4 sets of pillow cases in about 45 mins this way. I do it all the time for my house. I can never find extra cases that I like, so I make my own.

Someone told me the magic number to remember for making a standard pillowcase:

2/3 yard fabric
1/3 yard fabric

Some people add an inch or two for accent between the 1/3 and 2/3 fabric.

I've used this and it works. I have never made anything bigger than standard though.

I make pillow cases all the time out of all sorts of fabrics. I have made a lot of flannel ones for my niece and nephew cuz they like flannel. I made some out of that satiny fabric that you make jammy pants out of too. It is fun to match the fabrics to the person!!! And so inexpensive compared to buying them in the store specially if you get the fabrics on sale! :) Love the idea of the magic pillow case and am going to try that. That is a new idea for me since I am new!! :)

I got 4 made in time for my craft show today, and sold them pretty quickly at $ 5.00 per ... My other quick sales were my fat quarter aprons from Christmas prints, and a Dickey.. I only had enough of that print for one dickey.. I think I could have sold more.. the lady went straight to the restroom and put it on.. She came back grinning to show me how "good it looked with her top".. Did not do too well with the Bibs (from decorated finger tip towels) but that is OK.. I had really made them to donate to the Christmas Bureau (Salvation Army) The other hot item is the biggest laugh of all.. One day a friend said "too bad you cannot salvage all those circles you cut from the towels for the bibs".. So , I thought about it and started serging 2 together every once in a while.. Took a bunch of them marked 'mug rugs' and they went very quickly , also.. I had fun.. This was at the Senior Center and several people remarked that their Grands were all too old for the 'baby stuff' I had..

I've been working on more of these. I have
several cut out to put in bags with the poem attached to give to the little kids on our list. The bigger kids and grownups will get one with their gift stuffed inside it and tied with a ribbon. It's really cheaper than buying gift bags. Especially since I got ton of Christmas fabric on clearance last year.

Bren,
I bought one at a craft show for a pattern.. But, it is so simple a pattern is not necessary.. cut a rectangle about 15 inches wide and maybe 18 or 20 inches long. the longest part is the front and back.. Cut a circle out for the neckline 6 or 7 inches in diameter, I guess , and then a piece about 10 inches long and 3/4 the measure of the hole cut for the neckline..then mark each in quarters with pins, pin together and stitch together on the serger.. Serge all around the outer edge of the whole dickey and its finished.. Of course this has to be made from a knit.. and the directions are for a turtleneck.. :bg: :bg:

I am soooo slow some days!!!! I was at Walmart yesterday and they had Christmas fabric on sale for $1.00/yd. and when she scanned the bar code it was only $.50/yd. I couldn't remember anything I could do with Christmas fabric other than the amount I was already getting. I wanted to do some of these for next year. I will have to try to get back there this week. I may send my DDs to get it. (I have to go back to work tomorrow. They don't go back to school till Wed. and they LOVE going to Walmart.) My stash has overtaken my sewing room and my storage building so I didnt' want to get more "just because". :bluesmile
