Had a call from ds tonight on his way home from work dodging all the Ohio people who forgot how to drive in the snow! It was so funny because like Chrys says I've lived in the snow and in the desert and I'll take the desert! It was so pretty here today, not a cloud in the sky and sunny. Oh well someone's got to live in the south, might as well be me. We're going to Ohio in Dec. Hope the snow is gone!!! I love looking at pictures of snow so you all can post some scenery!

We got about 3 inches today, it's so beautiful - I don't mind driving in it at all. I guess when you grow up driving in it, it's not so bad. But the first snow, there are usually accidents, and on the news tonight they said there were over 80 accidents on the roads during afternoon rush hour! Gosh I hate the city, lol. People around here drive like idiots anyway, give them a bit of snow or wet roads and they think they're invincible. Up north it's not bad, but I'm far too close to Detroit. :bluesad:

We have a little snow on the ground still from Tuesday night. I hate it! I hate shoveling it. I hate paying for heat when it is this cold. I really hate driving in it. Oh sure -- it's pretty now but come April I really hate it. Winter hurts my old bones.
I dream of a green Xmas -- just like the ones I used to know (when I was growing up in Sunny California).
Just my opinion.

Funny, after 45 years in Sunny Southern California, the past 2 1/2 in Flagstaff have been a wonderful change! I only mind driving in the snow at night, 'cause it's hard for me to see -- we have no lights on the road where I am at, so it's really dark! But I really love the seasons, and don't think I would be happy having to go back to 'same old, same old'!

forecast here for the weekend - won't last till Christmas. The daft thing is the kids go wild when it snows maybe 1/2" and yell "SNOWDAY" - as if! It snows heavily so rarely people have forgotten what to do. I love the scrunch under your feet as you tread on the crisp white frosting and sink, so slowly, into the snow beneath. The shifting silence between the trees as the flakes float down in the moonlight.

The first day it snowed here my DGS age 4 was so happy. He said" I've been wishing & wishing & it finally worked." Snow is OK as long as I don't have to go out in it. My body doesn't tolerate cold well & I am too stubborn to wear a hat. yesterday was pretty watching it as I baked but today isn't so good as I have to go out to my sisters in 1 hour & it is cold. High today is supposed to be 19 degrees. I have decided to stay home tommorrow I am not going to fight the crowds in this cold.

It's been going since early this morning. Since I rent an indoor parking space where I live and park in the building where I work, I don't have to go outside. Well, I have to meet my brother after work and didn't wear my boots :bang: I'll have to think of something. I also managed to forget my wallet in my coat pocket ... at home ... so I don't even have my driver's licence or any other ID card with me. I'll be driving home very carefully tonight.

I have a great idea...I don't know how to make it work, but here goes...

We make a HUGE pipe from here in FL to up in Canada...we pipe our HOT AIR (politicians and all) up there. It keeps it from being too warm here, and discourages hurricanes. It makes it warm up there and discourages so much snow....whatcha think ??? (I don't think we can keep the bugs out though...maybe BIG and small bug nets... )

Well, we don't get snow (except for a day or two) but we get rain, then somedays it rains, occasionally it rains, oh yes, I almost forgot, it rains. Not that I don't like rain, I much prefer it to snow. But when I think of all the snow that they get in Ont/Quebec, then you blast them with all that hot air, well Chrys, it'd be a major flood up there!! It'd be like living in lotus land (BC)

We have snow too. And it can go away now. I have had two nights of driving home 17 miles that have taken me an hour. Last night it was so bad, I don't know how I got up and down the hills. It was like the road disappeared.

Dorothy, I remember my green Christmases in California too...oh those were the days! Now I'm in Buffalo and the entire area south of us has been under a Winter Storm Warning since yesterday morning. We only got about 2" here, but south of us they got nearly a foot of the white stuff, along with winds gusting to 35 MPH. Last night our wind chill was -4!!!!!! Too Cold! Pass the :coffee: please!

Well the snow came and has since gone, completely!!!! Nothing left on the ground. :bluesad: I just checked the Weathebug, we have strong winds, rain and Storms coming in later today, they have started to post the watch boxes.
Another Alberta Clipper later this week. Well I guess that old adage is true;
" If you want a variety of weather move to Ohio!!!!! You can get it all in one week here!!!!"
They said a few weeks ago that our second worst month for bad storms with Tornados is NOVEMBER!!!!!! Go figure!!

It's so hard to get into the Christmas mood when you are watching for Dorothy and Toto flying over your house!!!!!! Maybe it wasn't a Reindeer that ran over Grandma?

" I'm Dreaming of a White Funnel Cloud, just like the one that hit last Spring!!"
See the Houses flying, as Santa's trying to land on Timmy's roof AGAIN!!!

Well SewHappie that's why I no longer live in Ohio. The variety of weather was making me dizzy! I love Florida but when it rains here for more than a day at a time (which is very rare) people get so cranky!! Our storms usually come and go in about an hour. This rain has been here all day with lightning and lots of rolling thunder. So a good time to get in that sewing room and crank out some more pj's!!! I'm dreaming of a white Christmas also (FOR YOU). Actually I'll be in Ohio on the 16th of Dec through Christmas so I'm sure I'll see a bit of the old white stuff. My ds called and said he has a load of wood for the fireplace just for me!

Those gals are sneaky. Let's send them the bugs and lizards.

All kidding aside, this weather is getting stranger and stranger. Has anyone else noticed that? IT's off kilter everywhere.

Hope everyone is having a good preholiday time. I'm truly not ready for Christmas this year but send it on I took Katrina I can take anything.

MIL I agree the weather is acting strange. We have some beautiful snow then 60 degree weather. Oh it is not all the strange here to have the first snowfall, then a warm spell, but watching the national weather it does seem strange. I do remember a Christmas day when it was so balmy outside, we went visiting everyone on the Harleys. I myself like a white Christmas, think I would have a hard time living where it is warm. I am so use to it and I do like the snow. It has it drawbacks, but once you know them, it is beautiful.

Small world Sewhappie! I never did get to walk around Medina and look at all the interesting shops. She was only there for about three years and as their house was on the small side and having three children we didn't spend much time with them. Haven't seen her for almost a year but that's another really long sad story!

Bridesmom...We got 9 cm of snow on Friday and Saturday. Then over Sunday night we got 5 mm of freezing rain which made walking and driving very tricky Monday morning. On Monday the temperature went up to 9° C. Today it is supposed to go up to 13° C and we are getting heavy rain. Alll that snow has mainly disappeared...except for where I piled it when I shoveled my driveway. Silly me, if I had left it in the driveway, it would have all disappeared by now! ROLF. Thursday and Friday is back to below 0 C and snow flurries. MIL, yep...wacky weather everywhere! :re:

Consistent!! I think you have to live either at the North or South pole for consistent weather. :bluesmile . The evening started out with rain for us again, then more big fat flakes, now its raining again, with the occasional snowflake for effect I guess. I don't mind the snow, but I have to drive into Vancouver on Thursday and go to Richmond to the airport as well, so I really want NO snow then. My DD said they have tons of snow in North Van, the ski hills are hopping right now, earliest they've been open in years.

It snowed all weekend, was very nice. Then we got ice rain and everything was frozen in the morning, then we got rain so all the snow is gone, then the temperature hit 15C. Should go back to normal by the end of the day (4C). It is so grey outside. I think that's why we have snow during the winter so that it's not so blaaaaaaaa. :bluesad: Better all white than all grey.

Alberta Clippers, Panhandle Hooks, Lake Effect, NorEasters. Can't they just call them plain ol' SNOW STORMS anymore?
I heard Wednesday that we will be being a "Panhandle Hook" by Thursday Afternoon. I guess they can dump more snow than a Clipper or Lake Effect, BUT we will also be having Lake Effect Snow with this. SO tell me, HOW CAN THEY REALLY TELL WHAT"S DUMPING WHAT!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? :monkey:

No rain here but one day it's cold cold cold and the next it's hot hot hot. No wonder I'm feeling so achy. All my joints and muscles hurt and are very sore. OUchhhhh. I went to a hugh craft show today there was over 600 booths set up, they had lots of cute things for Christmas but as usual I couldn't make up my mine what I wanted to buy so I got a little but still could have marked off more on my Christmas list. I'll have to go back and shop some more. I did get into the local sewing center and picked up some blank dish towel for embroidery gifts. I'm slow but I'll get there.

Lots of rain last night and this morning then turning cold this morning. Big change from yesterday when the highs were in the 80's. It's now in the low 50's and dropping. Tonight it's suppose to get in the high 20's on this side of the lake. OUggghhhh bring on the hot cocoa.

We went yesterday to Lowe's and bought some shelves for my sewing room and with it raining he can't work so I'll guess this evening he'll be home putting up shelves. We have so many projects going on now, the front porch is underway and the sewing room needs these shelves, then there is the garage issue, my utility room is starting to have a path threw it because of all the tools he's put in there he has nowhere else to store.

Hope all who have snow are enjoying the white stuff, I don't think I could take the cold cold weather like you up north do all winter long. I like the breaks we get just not to the extremes like it has been lately but little breaks.

Especially when you are driving in blinding snow, walking on icy steps or paying for heat. And don't forget the fun of shoveling the walk. You just don't know what you are missing down there.
Of course, when it comes to nasty weather, I guess you got your share this year.

down the street from us is the cutest snowman, who is quickly disappearing, but he had an umbrella and rainboots on - it's a regular PNW snowman! Back east, we used carrots, twigs and coal/rocks plus a broom for decoration, out here, they get really fancy!

We started getting snow on Thursday of last week and have gotten a little each day. Looks so nice and clean with the fresh layers on top of the old ones. Temps only get to 30 degree's but we have had sun shining so to me it looks so nice. I did have to drive home from work on Thursday in the dark, on a two lane country type of road that needs to be a five lane major road, and it was slow going, but all was well. What would normally take me 15 to 20 mins drive home took an hour, but hey it was a wet snow so we all drove careful like. Very unusal for some people out here to be so careful.

I wish for a white Christmas here..

but I haven't seen snow here before of after Christmas in years..

right now we are in a deep drought, so we need the rain more then we need the snow.

our temps are just right for snow ( at least at night)

I grew up in the North, and I remember lots of snow, slush and the cold.. and how I miss it.

driving on snow is not as bad as driving on ice.

will work for snow!!!

Well, it snowed all day Sunday, but none of it stuck to the ground. I love to watch the snow fall...it doesn't happen very often around here.
BTW Magot...A PNW snowman is a Pacific NorthWest snowman...they are a rare breed and seldom seen. LOL :bg:

Interesting term. Here I am in BC as well but 500 miles further north. When my PNW relatives come to visit to see all our usual snow, they are shocked that they can't make snow men or snow balls.
Our snow is just too dry and fine. We have very little snow so far this year, but had some on the weekend. The temp is now -13 C or 8.6 F.

BBBRRR Nancy! That's snow like Saskatchewan gets. You have to hold it in your mittens for a long time to get it to stick. Unless of course, its a warmer day and the snow is sticky.

Thanks Barb for answering about the PNW, PNWer's are very close to you British babes (Jan), rain, rain, then somedays rain.

The funniest thing I ever saw was when we got married in Bakersfield Ca, and were travelling across to Vegas, came around the corner and there was a tumbleweed snowman, all dressed up in sparkly tinsel and a hat. Got a pictures of it somewhere.

The WHOLE state has been put on notice that we will be getting hit with snow starting later today. As usual I always wait to actually see it BEFORE I believe it!!!! Sometimes I think that the Weather people can be the BIGGEST DRAMA QUEENS ever!!!!!!!! " Oh we'll get up to 3' of the white stuff!"- Translated, a dusting to MAYBE 1" of the white stuff. What I really like is when they say it's going to be a "Sunny Day with MILD temps"- translation, Freezing temps and 3' of snow ON THE GROUND!!!!!

Well we have been told that it will start to snow tonight and to expect up to 7". Probably more like 3 to 4". As they say, Let Us See What We Will Get. It is cold outside, not a night to be out to long standing around doing nothing. All the neighborhood kids are hoping for school closures, all the parents are hoping NOT.

We just watched the weather channel. They said 5-8 & cold tonight but it is supposed to stop be 6 so the roads could be clear for the buses. I go both ways on the closings. If they close I have a house full of kids. If they are open I have to go out in it to take DGS's to school & DD to work.
I think I prefer the closing.

They predicted 1-3 inches; I've shoveled 6-8 inches of fluffy white stuff already and it is supposed to keep snowing until midnight. For a while it was 1" per hour. The kids will be disappointed as this is definitely not snowman snow. Heck, they're hoping for a "snow day". I've lived in Chicagoland area for 40+ years, and this is the only season I truly hate. Oh well, guess it could be worse  It'll eventually melt. And right now my DH is saying we're moving to a warmer climate....he left work at 4:00 pm and still isn't home yet! Every year people forget how to drive in snow and when the first major one hits....wowweee!

Wishing you all warmer weather.............

The snow is falling here too. Went out to eat with a gf and when we went in to eat it was lightly snowing. When we came out the ground was covered thickly and the driving was slow. My top speed was a whole 25 miles per hour. What took me 15 mins to get to took me over an hour to get home from. Went out to shovel it off the driveway before I pulled in, and it is still coming down. I like my snow even this heavy wet stuff we are having. Sometimes I get sorta freaked out by the driving in it, but I still like it. Shall see what tomorrow morning brings in the way of getting to work.

It FINALLY started here sometime between 8 and 9 tonight. They where calling for 1" an hour!?!? Don't think so, it looks like MAYBE 2" if that on the ground. It's stopped for well over 45 minutes now and I just checked the WeatherBug, looks like it's moving out pretty fast.
Did anyone see the News out of Chicago tonight with the Plane landing at the Airport and kept right on going until it went through the fence and into a street. No one on the plane was hurt, but some people in cars were taken to Hospitals. WIll the Pilot get a ticket for "running a red light?" (I know I'm bad.) :bolt:

We got some snow last night but the road here is clear and it is bright out there now. Cold though -- really cold.
That was one of the hardest things for me to get used to when we moved here. The brighter the sun the colder it is.

Well, all that wonderful white stuff that you ladies in MI, IL, and OH got yesterday is now here in Western NY...oh, joy--NOT! The wind is howling like crazy right now, and blowing the snow all over the place! It started in my area just after midnight last night, and you can't even tell that our plow guy has already plowed our driveway this morning. I think I'll wait till later to do my GS's birthday shopping...my sewing machine is lookin' real warm and cozy right now! :coffee:

Well we have snow and have had it on the ground since before Thanksgiving. I've already been snowshoeing. We probably have a foot on the ground and more everyday. We seem to get two to five inches a day this time of year, unless it is an Alberta Clipper sent down to us from you ladies in CAN. Then we can really get dumped on. We also get lake effect snows, but not as much as Carolyn in T.C. The winds have to blow out of the east, then we get dumped on with the Lake Huron effect. I love a white Xmas. My husband went to get our snowmobiles out of storage today. Before long we will be riding those. Sometimes, I have to ride mine to work. I always dream about living in a warm climate all year round, but I know I'd eventually miss the snow and cold weather. Especially, now that my body temp seems to run a little hot, it helps keep me cool.

Up until yesterday in Ottawa we were still seeing grass through the little bit of snow that was on the ground. But we were on the very edge of the weather front everyone else experienced....but only got 5 cm (approx. 2 inches). Tomorrow we're to get another 5 cm with a high of 1° C (O° C = freezing in F). But after that we are to go into a deep freeze....brrrrrrr.

Dustbunny...are you crazy! I grew up in the Midwest with all that snow and do not miss it one bit. I remember wearing those furry lined snow boots to keep your feet warm and dry on the way to school. Then your feet got all hot and sweaty during the day. By the time you got home, your feet were soaking wet anyway. YUCK!

Bought DD a pair of brown corduroy pants last week. She sees them as a novelty. I cringe when I remember how many pairs I had as a kid and how attractive they were back then (NOT! They didn't come with cute little boucle belts and pink stitching. Thank goodness for OLD NAVY!)

And by the way, it got cold and we had sleet last week. Someone rear-ended me on the way home. Not much damage to me or the car, but I'm ready for summer again.

I was wondering about Cookie -- Ladyslopokes -- is it cold up there for you? I remember my first winter here it went 10 days with temperatures below 0 F. Like Cookie I moved from California and I didn't know it got this cold outside of refrigerators!

Last week, weren't you the one commenting on rain every day!

I'd take that instead of the -22 C night time low and -11 C daytime high temperatures that we've had since Sunday. Definitely not normal for us this time of year. And we are supposed to get the Alberta clipper and the Colorado low meeting here on Friday. Bought a new shovel last night in preparation

SummersEchos,

I forgot where you live in MI? You have more new snow. We have only 5.75" new wet snow. Yes, it is wet and heavy, good for building a snowman! I just might just have to do that tomorrow. My DD is holed up in a hotel in another town. The driving got bad. So we told her just to pull off of the road and find a place to stay for the night.

Heard our weather forecast this evening. The storm is supposed to hit around 2:00 a.m. Friday morning. They say we are to get between 30 or 40 cm. in the next 24 hours. That's between 11 - 15 inches. UGH! Thank goodness I take the bus to work. It may take me all weekend to dig my car out. :bluesad:

Liz,
I am in Shelby Township, about the half way point between Detroit and Port Huron. I was surprised we had so much here, but that is what we were told. My moms neighbor has two young sons, and they shovel her driveway, so before they could shovel they had to build a snowman. Of course I went out to help and it was fun.
Hope your daughter has better driving tomorrow. Where is she coming from?

Hey Mother In Law!
In almost 10 years of living and working in the Dallas area, I have visited every suburb except Mesquite, Garland and Rowlett! And to think I could have met you in person!

And as for our summer heat...that's why God invented AC, vine covered patios and water parks.

And our heat was the inspiration for the frozen margarita, which was invented right here in Big D (there's a great story about some bartender and a Slurpee Machine he bought from another Big D Company--7/11--and modified to create the frozen concoctions).

Now I'm not one to indulge in margaritas, but I've seen these cold little concoctions take the edge off many heat-weary folks in August.

I'll settle for iced tea...served on a vine-covered patio or in the comfort of the AC.

We got dumped on last night and it's still coming.
The neighbors across the street are stuck in the driveway.
My husband is in the other room mumbling something like "I knew there was a reason I wanted to get gas for the snow blower yesterday."
I have to work all day -- that means I just stay right here. Then I have Xmas sewing. When the walk is clear and the snow stops -- maybe tomorrow -- I will go see King Kong.

We have a total of 7" of new snow. It is still gently snowing now, nothing major. Everything is coated in the beautiful stuff. I went out and took pictures. It is stuck in all of the trees, do to it being wet. I love it when it looks like this. I don't like driving in it though. My dd was coming home from Central MI University, in Mt. Pleasant. She got as far as Clare, MI and then stopped. They had freezing rain and snow. She said, there were cars in ditches everywhere along the road. Yes, I hope the driving is better for her today. It might not be for Carolyn though. They are supposed to get some lake effects today. :whacky:

We've been hit: 41cm yesterday. It is so nice outside. The kids are having a blast and parents are joining in. Two lanes street have come 1, double parking (next to a huge snow bank) everywhere. That part is a nightmare but it'll be OK in a couple of days. It's heading East. I'm calling dad to make sure everything's OK over there.

It's a trifle chilly Jan; just come home from a party and it's -4 degrees with a little frost. The pond is frozen over and the cat is huddled against the radiator (for Christmas I've bought her one of those beds that hooks onto the radiator but don't tell her shhhhh).

I always wanted one of those beds for our cat but never thought she would have the brain to use it. Daughter just returned home from Preston - she says it is too hot here! We are predicted snow flurries on Wedneday. That will get everybody all excited about having a white Christmas - as if that will happen, and they will be offering odds at the bookies as usual..

Daughter just returned home from Preston - she says it is too hot here!

I used to do that when I had weekend breaks to come home from working in Lithuania. I'd leave temperatures of -20 or colder there (plus windchill) and then it would be +5 here (positively tropical) and I'd insist on turning the heating down.

A little frozen rain today but still no white stuff.

How are things at your end Judy?

We were lucky...only 25 cm. Montreal got the most....worst since 1971 I heard. I was in heaven when I got home from work...one of my neighbours had blown out my driveway from the street to behind my car. Saved me a lot of shovelling. Even with him doing that it took me 1 1/2 hours to shovel out around my car, my porch and walkways. So I'm all set til the next one. :re:

I sure don't miss the blizzards and freezing temps, but I do miss it when theres a fresh fall of snow, with big fat flakes gently falling. I guess I could go lay out my batting on the front yard, it would look kind of snowy?

Just returned from Northern NB = 70 cm of snow in 24 hrs. I was supposed to drive back yesterday but was kind of held back. I have to admit it was gorgeous. I think Mary is having a taste of it right now. There was weather warning for her area when I left at lunch time.

Thank the good Lord y'all get the snow and not us. We get an inch, and the whole area shuts down, schools let out, workers go home. The grocery stores get hit with mothers buying up all the milk and bread, and I still have not figured out why. It's a hoot here when we get snow.
Of course, the blizzard of 1993 really hurt, 13 inches overnight all the way down to Birmingham Alabama, Bama will remember. It was awful!!

We got Magot's Rain. Now that the kids are home & want to go sledding/snowboarding there is very little snow on the ground. The next predicted snow is Jan 5. we are supposed to have rain/ snow mix on & off until then. They go back to school on the 9th so that will probably be when it gets bad.

These guys just kill me: they have a hard time predicting tomorrow's weather and they think they're able to predict what will happen next week. Dad was a weatherman (we called him the liar) and he would joke about the predictions.

I used to work for the paper on Saturdays. The last thing I would do was to put in the weather (small paper with no real news assistant on weekends). After that I could go home and sometimes it would come in late so, rather than wait, I would just make it up -- using the last prediction that came in as a starting point.
It drove my boss nuts. Not that I made it up but that I would just say "I made it up." I don't think he believed me. But I did and I was right as often as the real weather people.
