Has anyone heard of or seen postcard quilts? They are 4" x 6", are made of fabric, and are decorated with embellishments (such as sequins, paint, ink, and stitching). I think it would be alot of fun, and the small size of the postcard would make it easy to do more than one. This is a great way to do that art quilt you always wanted to do, on a smaller scale.

I would be more than willing to put a swap together, if anyone is interested. We could do themes, if most people wanted it that way, but it's not necessary.

If you're interested but want to see an example, go to this website:

http://qnm.com/webextras/feature186/

The website has templates for two Christmas postcards, plus one for the address side.

I'm thinking I could put people in groups of three or four (if you're feeling creative) and you could sign up for two groups if you want, but no more than two groups. You would mail the postcards directly to the other participants.

Let me know what you think. Oh, this won't start until next year.

As POSTCARDGIRL, let me be the first to say "I'm in!" I did one of these swaps last spring but really haven't had time to do any more but I do love them!

I've been wanting to make some of these and a swap would "make" me make them, huh? I can't until after the holidays though and truly, probably not until end of January or early February at the earliest. If you can wait that long, I'm in!

I won't have time for this until after the first of the year. I'll wait and see what kind of response I get. It may only be a few of us, but I absolutely want to do this!

Okay I saw the pictures but I am not sure what it is. Looks like the size of a postcard and then you applique designs on them? Can you do this without the applique?

This sounds really fun. It almost reminds me of the "Artist Trading Cards" that I saw quite a few times on different shows on HGTV. As for the postcard, I would imagine that you could do anything you wanted on the front. I think it would even be possible to do a small pieced block, with borders of course to make it the right size. I am interested in doing this, and since I have no major projects at the moment, I may try to get an early start. So many ideas for the front to decide, I can feel them running through my head as I type lol.

You have my attention. I can't wait!
Question. Would we be mailing these as postcards to our swap partners or for them to use as postcards?

I've never made a fabric postcard myself, but I've been reading alot about them. They are like mini quilts, postcard size, that you embellish any way you want, then mail just like a paper postcard. Part of the fun is collecting the cards with the various postmarks on them. You do have to make sure the embellishments you use won't get in the way of the mailing process at the Post Office.

I'm getting excited about this! I'm glad you all are interested, too!

Sounds like fun. I've made a few, and received a few. They're easy and quick.
You can make a large piece, back it with whatever, so that you can write on it and stamp it, then cut it down to 4" X 6" pieces and either do a tight zipzag or sew a very narrow binding around the edges, and voila! postcards.
Let's do this after the holidays -

I have never participated in a swap before, but this sounds like an interesting project; I would love to get involved - next year.
I have been overwhelmed with some pups lately but have managed to get homes for most of them . With Christmas around the corner I would be too busy to make the cards this year: I do hope that it comes on stream in 2006.

New to the forum and saw this and thought WOW! I do a lot of CQ, Applique, SRE, BDE, and Stumpwork, but have never done anything like this. This sounds like a lot of fun, and would love to try it. If I am allowed (being new to the forum, so not sure what the rules are) I would most definately love to be included.

Well Hi Mary and thank you for the welcome. Most of my friends just call me JK (short for Julieanne Katherine).

CQ is Crazy Quilting, SRE is Silk Ribbon Embroidery and BDE is Brazilian Dimensional Embroidery. To me it is the most beautiful form of needle art. Stumpwork is another form of raised embroidery(as with BDE) and goes back to the 17th century I believe. I am now in the beginning stages of learning how to needle paint and just ordered the book "Painting With a Needle: Learning the Art of Silk Embroidery With Young Yang" and looking forward to getting my "needle" wet with that! If you would like to see some of my work here is my Webshots page:

http://community.webshots.com/user/jkalvarado

Again, thank you for the welcome and look forward to getting to know you and everyone better!

Have a wonderful day!

Looks like we're getting more and more interest as time goes on. We should have enough participants by the new year! Start thinking of ideas now(well, we all do that anyway, don't we?). Keep the enthusiasm going!

You do beautiful work, JK! I hope I get one of your postcards next year!

Merry Christmas to all!

JK, welcome. Where in So. Calif. are you? I am in Santa Clarita.

I might be interested in this swap. There have been talk about this on another group that I'm on, and just a couple of days before I bought the magazine with the patterns in it. I guess it's gaining popularity right now.

Hi Adva,

Sorry for not posting sooner, been sick.. Ugh.. Yes, this looks like it is going to be great fun, and I love trying different things. I live in Calimesa which is very close to Palm Springs and Big Bear Mountain. Small town with 3,000 people counting the horses chickens and cows... ;)

Why don't you join, I think you will really enjoy it!

Thanks Dawn, Mary and Adva for your kind welcome and kind words on my stitching. I am sorry that I have not responded before now, but have been ill for a few weeks. I am looking forward to this, plus the RR that is starting around the same time, so I should be kept busy!

Merry Christmas to everyone, and God Bless!

Hi Adva and all, hope everyone had a wonderful, safe and blessed holiday! Hubs got me some fabulous books on Needle Painting, BDE, and embellished purses, and some gorgeous threads.

Adva, Calimesa is really a nice little town, the biggest thing here is Stater Brothers Grocery, and a lovely but small Quilt Shop, and that's about it except for the usual Mackie D's and such.

I am really looking forward to this swap, and have ordered a couple of things for it already. Been burned out on making Christmas gifts, and wanted something new, so signed up for a couple of things, and I usually prioritize RR's and swaps. RR's you are given more time, so all the other fun things can get done sooner. Why don't you join in?

:bolt: OK Swappers, we're off and running for the Fabric Postcard Swap. I will be taking names and addresses until I get 16 names. Since I am new to this, I don't want to overwhelm myself, so I think 16 names is a good start. Depending on when I get all the names I'm looking for will determine when the postcards will have to be completed and mailed by. You will have at least one month to complete your postcards. Send your names and address to this email:

<email address removed for privacy>

No one will have to make more than 3 postcards. I think 3 is a good amount to start with. Don't you?

The 'theme' is going to be anything that is unique to where you live. It can be a state flower, city landmark, celebrity birthplace, or anything else you feel makes your country, state, city, home, etc. different from all the rest.

You can make all of your postcards the same or make each one different, your choice. There are a few things that you MUST do though, and here's a list:

1. Make your postcard 4"x6". Embellish only one side, the other side will be for the addresses and postage.

2. Ensure the embellishments won't interfere with the postal processing. No ribbons streaming, no large buttons or charms, etc. Remember, you will be mailing these postcards AS IS, they will not be protected! Part of the fun is to get the different postmarks!

3. Stabilize your postcard. It should be at least as stiff as a regular postcard. If it's too 'floppy' it won't make it through the postal processing.

4. When you are ready to mail your postcards, take them to the mail counter personally. One reason for this is to let the postal clerk OK your postcards for mailing. The other reason is to let them Oooo and Ahhhh over your beautiful creations! What fun is it if you can't show off your work?

5. Make sure the technique you use for marking the address is permanent! You don't want it unraveling or fading out during the mailing process.

6. This is most important: If you sign up for this, follow through. We are going to be creating beautiful things for our swap partners, and we will be expecting to receive the same. Please don't disappoint!

Ask questions! If you have a question, post it on this board, so everyone can get the benefit of the answer! Remember, I'm new to this too, so I'll be needing input and suggestions, too!

Are y'all excited? Me too!!! Here we go!

When you send me email in reply to the swap, please put Postcard swap, or something similar in the Subject area. That way, if your email gets sent to the spam folder, I'll be able to rescue it.

Thanks.

CodyGramma, did you want to sign up for the swap or were you just making a comment on the Timtex? If you want to sign up, send me an email with your name, address, and your SWN user name.

Everyone, if you do send me an email to sign up for the postcard swap, please include your SWN user name along with your name and address.

So far, there are four of us. Looking good!

I'll be sending you an email! My other tip is to make sure the postal worker HAND CANCELS the stamp to prevent damage when they run them through the machines!!! My REAL postcards often get beaten up in the postal machines when it comes to cancelling the stamps!

DawnP,

Chances are you are not going to get 16 names. Most of the swaps I held didn't get many more than ten people, some much less. Rather than a cut off number we generally give a sign-up by date.

That sounds more reasonable. The cutoff date will be Jan 20, next Friday. Send an email to me: <email address removed for privacy> with your name, SWN user name, and mailing address.

NLT Sunday, Jan 22, I'll send out the names and addresses to everyone.

ESRUN3, since this is a new technique for everyone, I'll set the mailing date to 28 February.

The cutoff for signup was yesterday, but I'll let signup go through this weekend. So Sunday is the very last day you can sign up for this swap, then Monday, I'll be sending out names and addresses.

So far, there are 5 of us, with ESRUN3, it'll make 6, a nice even number.

I can't even find my sewing machine in the mess right now and I have a pile of things I never got completed before Christmas that I want to finish before I start new things. Hopefully we'll do this swap again cuz I really wanted in but I don't want to run into problems of not being able to deliver. :bluesad:

I emailed everyone with their swap recipients' addresses. Did everyone get their email? Please let me know if you didn't.

As I was thinking about what to put on the postcards that related to my state, I realized how restrictive the theme was. So, let's do this; if you don't want to, or if you can't think of anything for all three of the postcards, just do whatever you want. I don't want to restrict your creativity (or mine). I want us to have fun. So just have fun! OK?

Mine are ready to be backed. I am still a little worried about how to do the back so it goes through the post OK. I asked the lady at my post office but all she kept telling me was that it wouldn't count as a postcard for price so it didn't matter. This was at the post office window at a local florist I may have to hunt down the actual post office and see what they say there.

Here's more web sites, just to look; maybe give you some ideas.

www.art2mail.com
www.dollmakersjourney.com/fabricpostcards
www.dollyduo.com/Fabric%20Postcard%20Instructions

Aren't they beautiful?

Mine are still in the planning stage. I can't get my mind to settle on the three designs. I'm going to do at least one with a Texas theme, but the others I think I'll just play! I'm dying to use some of my silk and special fabrics (you know the ones you collect for that crazy quilt you're going to make someday). I'll be working on the postcards after my quilt guild meeting next week.

I will try to post photos on line, if you send me digital pics of your postcards. We do need to be able to show them off!

GO SEAHAWKS!!

WOW!! Sorry I haven't kept in touch. I have some good news though!! I have been out of the loop because I bought a house and have been cleaning and moving for the past couple of weeks. My DSL just got turned back on today so I was finally able to get on here to let everyone know. I haven't started my postcards yet, but never fear. I have every intention of getting them done and mailed on time. Now that I have things mostly set up I can begin to load my sewing room and setting it up....yes I said SEWING ROOM!!! My new house has a room that I can use strictly for sewing and crafting. I am so excited! I have a friend that will be giving me a table to use for sewing on, so until then, I will still have to actually sew on the kitchen table. I just have to get to the garage and pull out some fabric to get these created. I have quite a few ideas for them so we will just have to see how they turn out. I can't wait to recieve mine and I hope everyone enjoys the ones I make. Talk to y'all later.

Has anyone mailed their cards yet?
After the disaster at the PO, I've finished 3 more, but I need the addresses to which to mail them again. I posted a private message to you, Dawn, but wanted to post here, too, so that you'd be sure to get it.
I greatly simplified these cards, so that there would not be a problem with mailing them.

Everyone that's in the postcard swap, please send me the names I gave to you for the ones that will be receiving your postcards. My hubby cleaned out my Sent folder, and I didn't think to keep the list any place else, so I don't know who I assigned to whom. Becky lost her addresses, but I don't know which addresses I sent to her! Help me out, please!

Becky, I sent you a private email.

Thanks.

I have 2 completely finished and the last one is almost done. I think they turned out rather well. I showed a friend and she liked them. I don't have a camera on hand right now, all mine are packed still. But I will hook up my scanner and scan one to show. I don't want to post any pictures until the postcards are recieved though, because I think that would kill the suprise of getting them in the mail. I should have mine mailed out Monday though. I will try to finish that last one up tonight.

I'll be mailing my postcards out today. Charity, Gina, and Becky, be looking for them this week. I'm going to try to mail them as is, but if that doesn't work, I have envelopes already to go. I took pictures, but won't post them until they have been received.

Did anyone have as much fun creating the postcards as I did? I thought it was a blast!

Can't wait until I get mine!

I mailed my postcards yesterday afternoon. I was able to mail them as is, so I hope they arrive in one piece after traveling through the postal system. Shari, Gina, & Becky were my recipients. I had fun, I was just a little disappointed that I couldn't do more to mine. I moved in the middle of the swap so I lost some time and wasn't able to do mine the way I had originally planned. Oh well. Hope everyone had fun anyway and enjoys all their postcards. I scanned an image of mine since I don't know where my cameras are. Once all the cards have been recieved I'll post it.

 My cards are mailed, as is, as of today. I had to pay an additional charge to make sure they will be handled by hand through the cancellation process.

I had so much fun making them. I hope to do this again later this year! Maybe with a Holiday theme....?
If anyone wants to take the reins and do another swap, I'll participate.

I signed up for Webshots, so I can post pictures of the cards. Send the pics as attachments to: <email address removed for privacy>

Have a wonderful day all and be looking for lots of color in your mail!

When is the maililng date? I'm afraid you're going to say March 1...I've just gotten started on mine - this has been a crazy month! I will get them in the mail by the end of the week. Having real trouble figuring out what to do for mine, as I'm from Pittsburgh, but my recipients are all most likely NOT Steelers fans, which is what I was originally thinking! :bg:

The mailing date was 28 Feb. There are three of us who got theirs mailed out on time, as far as I know.

Shari, you might want to contact your other two recipients and let them know that their postcards will be a little late. I'm sure they won't mind. I don't mind (I'm on your list). Just get them out as soon as you can.

And most important of all, HAVE FUN!!

Becky

I got your postcard today. It looks just like a real postcard would, except it's made out of fabric. I love it! Thank you.

Did you get the one I sent you yet? Let me know. As soon as everyone gets theirs, I'll post pictures.

Becky! I got your postcard too - question - mine are coming out a LOT more flexible than yours - yours is more like a postcard! Could you tell me exactly what your layers are? What did you use as your stabilizer?

BTW, everyone, Becky's postcard is absolutely FABULOUS!!

Okay, after receiving that fabulous postcard today, I went back and rethought my postcards - I decided to take out the batting and it made them stiffer - and just the smidge thinner that I needed. Don't know why but I kept thinking they NEEDED batting in them! :nc: Cards to be mailed (hopefully) Sunday (our mall's po is open Sunday) or Monday am on my way to work. I do apologize for the delay - the end of the month arrived too quickly! (or should I say the beginning of March arrived to quickly...)

I made my postcard with Timtex, which I had on hand. Fused the fabrics for the front to it, did the stitching, then fused the fabric to the back, wrote on it, stamped it. Since it was much thinner than the first batch I did (they were more embellished), it only needed the regular amount of stamps for a postcard.

When they were mailed, the clerks at the post office kept saying they'd never seen anything like them. They didn't hesitate to hand cancel them. lol This wasn't in the town where I live; the clerks here have seen a little bit of everything from me, but they also were the ones who rejected my first cards!
Still don't understand that, since, if they were to be hand cancelled, they wouldn't go through any machines.

I picked up some Peltex at Hancock's, which seems to be a bit more flexible than the Timtex. Thought it might be fun to use for postcards, too, as it is also a bit thinner, so that more embellishment, i.e. thicker cording, threads, charms, etc. might be used.

I received Charity's postcard yesterday and love it, despite the fact that you misspelled my name! Thanks, Charity!

I'd love to see another swap happen here. For me, just thinking of what to put on the front is the hardest, most time consuming part, but the actual construction goes pretty fast.

I used Timtex, too. I used spray on adhedsive to attach the batting and top fabric to the Timtex. Then I did the quilting/embroidery on all three layers. I thought I'd have a problem machine embroidering on the Timtex, but I didn't. I did use a 90/14 embroidery needle for the machine embroidery. I did freemotion embroidery and quilting through the Timtex with no problems! Then, after all the fun stuff was done, I adhered the postcard label to the other side of the Timtex, trimmed the edges, then zigzagged them together with a satin stitch.

Here's where the photos are of the postcards I sent out. Charity, Gina, and Becky, if you don't want to spoil your suprise, don't look.

I've gotten Becky's card, so far.

I got cards today from Becky and Dawn. They are AWESOME!! Becky, I am SOOO sorry I misspelled your name. I know how annoying that can be as my maiden name is polish and NO ONE ever spelled it right. I feel awful!! How did I misspell it?

Anyway, I look forward to recieving my final postcard as soon as it gets done and mailed.

I used Peltex in mines, I'll have to try to find some Timtex for next time - my cards do seem a little more stiff but not as much as the Timtex one.

My cards are done, just addressed them - they will be in the mail tomorrow (Sunday). Once you get them, please let me know so I can explain what the picture means! When you get them you'll understand...for the rest of you, I took digital pics which I will post!

Got my postcards mailed - had to convince the ladies at the po that the stamps would hold and they'd make it okay. Charged me 39 cents plus a 13 cent non-machineable surcharge- BUT then ended up costing me 60 cents per postcard because they didn't have any to equal 52 cents to fit in the space.

Mine only cost 37 cents and the guy stamped them at the counter before putting them in the mail. I don't know if they ran them through a machine or not, because it looks like both the ones I have recieved were ran through something. That and the white part of mine from Dawn is a little dirty which makes me mad. I may have to take my spot remover after it.

The post offices around the country certainly don't have standardized procedures!
Reading the prior messages, and my own experience, show this. Before I left home on the day my cards were mailed, I weighed each card, and they were all less than 1 ounce. So, I applied postcard rate postage: $.24. They were mailed without any comment about a 'non-machineable surcharge'. Either two post offices here haven't heard about this charge, or it isn't a standard one throughout the postal system.
So far, I've read that Charity and Dawn received theirs, but not the 3rd one, so KNOW that $.24 was sufficient postage.
Charity, you addressed the card to me : Becy Sunderman - my name is BECKY
Doesn't matter, it got here. Since I married this husband, it's the last name that usually gets misspelled/mispronounced, not the first!

It's me. I have been ashamed to show my face over here. I have had a week full of good intentions to get to the post office. Everytime I was set to go something else came up. Ya'll can shoot me now. I did finally make it to the post office today at noon. I was so flustered that I forgot to ask her to hand cancel them so who knows what condition they will be in when you get them.

Dawn I did manage to get the pictures taken before sending them off so I will get those to you ASAP.

I got your postcard today!! It looks fantastic! It also looks like a bridge, abstractly, of course. I like it!

Has everyone gotten the ones I sent?

I promise to try harder to get them mailed by the deadline. Can't wait to get Sherri's! It should get her anytime now as Dawn just live a hop skip and a jump from me.

Just wanted to let you all know that I might not be on much for the next week so if you get mine and I don't respond to your post it just means I haven't been to the boards. I'll be back once the kids are back to school.

How about later this summer for another one? Or maybe we can do one for the holiday season. It would be fun to make and to receive a holiday postcard, wouldn't it?

Sorry that I've not been in contact. Lightning came into our house during a storm on Mar 9 and destroyed, among other things, my computer. My computer guy just got a new one built and installed for me last week. Of course, I lost all my passwords, etc., including the one to this forum.
I've received all three postcards - all from Texas, all with a Texas theme, done with embroidery machines, I think.
Since I don't own an embroidery machine, and have plenty of Texas themed cards now, I think I'll pass on another swap.
It was fun.
