Hello everyone, I'm new to the board so happy I found it. I really want to learn to sew, I was taking a sewing class about 6 years ago but stopped because I was getting marrried and no longer had time. Well, recently I purchased a machine from Walmart it's a Brother LS-1717b. My question is, I don't know how to read the needle plate. The old machine I have that someone gave to me has the lines numbered, for example, 3/8, 5/8, 7/8. I don't know where the 3/8 line starts.

Can someone help me? It doesn't say in the manual. :bang:

I can't help you with the Brother sewing machine but wanted to say hi and you'll get lots of help from the ladies on this forum.
I'm teaching myself to sew also and I have had lots of help from here. It's great!

Have you got a seam gauge or a measuring tape? Put the "0" even with the middle of your needle. Lower your presser foot because your 3/8 inch may be close to the edge of your foot (depending on type of foot and brand) also, when you sew, that is what you will be seeing. just measure to each of your measurments on the measuring tape. They will be accurate. If you have a measuring tape, there may be a protector at the end so you may need to move to the 1 inch and then measure out.
