My 80 year old father asked me if i could make him a couple of nightcaps for sleeping because his head gets cold. Does anyone know how I would go about making this? I measured his head around & it was 23". What type of fabric should I use -I don't want him to be too hot -maybe a light flannel? I'm thinking fleece would be too hot. Is there a simple pattern that someone could reccomend? Thanks for your help! Dolores |

I have used flannel for kids' costumes and the like. If there is a wife in the picture, you should make her a dust cap to go with it. As for the nightcap pattern, look for a basic clown hat pattern, That is the shape. Just don't put the stiffening in it. I've never seen one that was actually worn to bed so I don't know how it is held on, but you might need to put a row of ribbing around the bottom to help keep it on comfortably. The dustcap is a large circle that is gathered on the edges, elastic is run through it and that draws it up. I usually use a bias tape casing around the inside of the cap instead of turning it under so that I can put eyelet lace around the edges. This can be a really fun project. (You could also make matching nightshirts to go with it.) pam

This is a child's PJ pattern with nightcap. It goes up to size 14, which should make the cap large enough to fit an adult. I haven't seen any adult patterns, but there may be one in the costume section. A santa or elf hat, without the fur trim, might work. Hancocks has a pattern on line for a nice cap http://www.headhuggers.org/patterns/spatt01.htm I'd be tempted to make the stocking cap out of a nice soft cotton knit, that way you don't need ribbing to keep it on. I had another site, I just lost it, so I will try to find it again. Laura

I just remembered what it was, Wild Ginger has a free program to download with all types of hats, bags, etc. I'm pretty sure there is a hat pattern in there Wild Things (http://www.wildginger.com/products/wildthings.htm) Laura

Pam, The nightcap idea sounds lovely --and matching nightshirts too -but you're assuming that I'm a highly motivated individual! *lol* I just wanted something simple that would wear well. *smiles* Thanks for your help! Dolores |

Wouldn't those cheap $1.00 santa hats they sell at Dollar Tree and other places make a perfect pattern for a night cap? I have some old ones and some fabric and I am going to try this. |

Well that's just too clever! What a great idea that was GM! I know I picked up a santa hat at Value Village last year for $1, once it was washed it was perfect.

Excellent idea about using a santa hat as a pattern! I have several old ones that I can use. Thanks so much (obviously I still haven't done this project *lol* ---I have until Dec 26th...and I'll probably wait until the last possible second to get it done! Dolores |
