We haven't done this in a while. Let's discuss holiday fabrics to sew. Lame, slinky, velours, sequined lace, etc.

What have you sewn up in these fancier fabrics? Has anyone put in a rhinestone zipper?

I've made everything from church banners, to jumpers and vests, to childrens' dresses elegant evening gowns with metalic inserts going into the sweeping train out of velvet.

I've made color guard flags and skirts out of the lame (but I prefer the lame that has a knit backing). I've also made choir dresses with 45 inch lame' puff sleeves on black satin.

I've made a sheath dress out of the cheaper sequins and numberous tops out of the expensive sewn sequins. I haven't had an opportunity to make anything out of the sequined lace though.

Love velour! Jogging outfits, evening gowns, dresses, skirts, pants, vests, robes! Great fabric!

There are some great patterns out there for all the fabrics listed. There are many Hollywood glamour patterns first designed in the 20s to 40s in the Vogue pattern book for evening gowns. There are great skirts that drape well in most all the pattern catalogs right now. It is a great time to be sewing!

Okay, silly me. When I read holiday fabric, I was just thinking of the print holiday fabric. I'm planning (like I'll get to it anytime soon), on making with the print holiday fabrics a bunch of mini-stockings to make a garland to go up our staircase banister.
Yeah, haven't used any of the other stuff. But, they're pretty, and shiny to look at.

I did a sequined knit dress for my daughter one New Years, it will be the last time too, I hated working with it, there were sequins and silver sparkly stuff everywhere. The fanciest I have gotten this year is cuddle satin, the soft backed satin used for pj's. We don't go out anywhere special so I don't need an outfit, though DD may be asking for something again this year.

Hi paroper
I have a nice piece of black Slinky... I bought it at the sewing show I went to in Toronto... want to make a long gored skirt...never sewn with the fabric before...what size needle do i use with that fabric...and is it easy to sew with.

I'm not as knowledgeable as Paroper, but I do have Sandra B.'s book about fabrics. Here is what she says about slinky.

Preshrink, and use a 75/11 needle. Stitch with a small zigzag. Be sure to stabilize long vertical seams with clear elastic to prevent seam sag. It doesn't sound to me like slinky is a good choice for a gore skirt. It's heavy enough to stretch so allow your skirt to hang for 24 hrs. before hemming.

I love reading about what you're doing with these fabrics but it's out of my league. I'm a cotton flannel person!

mmmmmm.... I love holiday/evening fabrics. Satin can annoy me b/c it marks so easily but I love all other silks, taffeta, velvet. I'm going to have to go feel my silk stash now....
