I understand pulling a thread allows you to see the grain of the fabric and helps in making a garment fall straight. But where do you start from and are there types of fabric where this doesn't work well? I'm not talking about fancy fabrics (it's been too long since I held a needle - I'm back to being a beginner), just your basic cottons/knits. Please be patient. Thanks!

It won't work with a knit but it will will work with most fabrics that are woven. Sometimes it is a little hard to see though. Dorothy |

If your purpose is to square the fabric, start at the first or second thread that seems to travel all the way across the cut. If it is cut high in the center, you may want to start there and go each direction. If you start at the selvage, it is easiest to make a little cut through the selvage to get a thread that is easy to pull.

Starting in the center is a good idea since they always seem to break by then and you have to start again from that part anyway. Dorothy |

sometimes if the fabric is loosely woven, you might need to pull 2 threads at once. This gives you a clearer line on which to cut. nancy |
