The last sewing machine I sewed on had 1 stitch function - straight: forwards & backwards. It was really old so I decided to get a new machine and start sewing again (at least attempt to sew again). I took it out of the box and just stared. Where do I start?? Half of the explanations for the different feet I didn't understand. I got a simple pull-on skirt pattern to see if I remembered what to do. Well, I didn't consider myself a clue-less person until last night. Any suggestions anyone? Thank you.
- Maureen.

Relax. You can do this.
Just read through the directions for the skirt from beginning to end. Don't worry about those feet until you need them. You don't have to know everything at once.
What sort of fabric do you have? No stripes or patterns to match I hope. Now use the nap layout -- unless you know there is no nap or directional pattern and don't have enough fabric for the nap layout. Measure from the arrows to the selvage to be sure the pattern is on straight (top and bottom of the arrow should be the same distance.
Cut it carefully and start working your way through the pattern one step at a time. If you run into a problem ask here -- Pam can explain anything you need.

I pulled out the manual and started reading thru it again. I felt a little more confident and my dd was sound asleep and my dh was out of the house - time to conquer my fear! I was able to thread the machine (I LOVE the needle threader!) and set up the bobbin. At least my old sewing machine had the same type bobbin so it was a little familiar. I was able to do some practice stitches on an old pillowcase. The stitches looked great. I figured I'd end on a high note and stop there. My goal is to try and sew a simple pull-on skirt. Baby steps is the key for me..... :dave:
