So you want to know "What did she do this time?" I was attempting to iron some fusible interfacing to a piece of fabric. The problem, the wrong side was up. Now the bottom of my iron is sticky. I have applied some iron cleaner but it looks like it isn't going to work. Any suggestions?

Gina, don't know what will work but here is a link to another thread with some iron cleaning suggestions that you might try. http://sew-whats-new.com/vb/showthread.php?p=138363#post138363 Just a suggestion for the future, I always use a teflon pressing sheet when working with fusibles to ensure that I don't have this happen. Before I had the teflon sheet, I would use parchment paper. It holds up to the heat of an iron. I usually put a piece down on the ironing board and then use another piece on top. I make sure that I mark the sides so that I always use the same side towards the iron. Good luck. TTFN from

I did that today too but it was a very little piece. I have one of those sponges with the green scrubby thing on one side and I just very carefully and gently rub that green part against the stuck interfacing and it took it right off. Then I grabbed a huge piece of wax paper and iron it. For some reason the wax melts and cleans the iron - iron has to be hot of course. I didn't even turn my iron off when I removed the interfacing. Hope it works for you Violet I've decided to live forever - so far, so good.

Oh! How that brings back souvenirs (with an "s" at the end). I use a sheet of fabric softener, wrap it over a knife and rub it on the plate while it's hot. |

It has probably happened to most of us! Join the club. Luckily, when I did it, it was one of those times that I didn't cut corners, so the iron was spared. But I didn't have enough interfacing to make up a new piece. Hassles... I still think I ought to buy myself some yardage to keep on hand instead of getting 3/8 yd everytime I start something new!

Oh yeah you need to keep some on hand. Take your Joann coupon and buy a bunch. I buy it five to ten yards at a time. But I use it a lot. Well it came off after three applications of iron cleaner and some elbow grease. My husband thought I did it on purpose to get a new iron. I have been bugging for a new one ever since I knocked mine on the floor and broke the steam part. Should have told him I couldn't get it off but that would have meant that I had to stop ironing and wasted a whole evening. Gina

I just got paid for a little side.."sneek and peek...job. Hummmm How terrible would it be to buy myself a christmas present??? It WOULD make it easier to finish up all those unfinished gifts I'm still working on. Somebody tell me I wouldn't be a selfish troll to spend that kind of money on myself....anybody...please???? |

Buy the iron -- you need it to finish those gifts. That is not selfish, in fact it is quite generous of you. Dorothy |

You Guys are the greatest......I will go by there this afternoon. Has anyone ever watched Sausan Khalje(sp) on her "Sew Much More" program? I LOVE this show. I get it on the DIY network at one in the afternoon every weekday. Today is a modular design show. (Guest is Kayla Kennington) Has anyone ever done this? It looks to be several rectangles bar-tacked together. I have some fabric that I think would be really pretty like this. Seems easy enough....? (not a pun...I swear)...get it?...seems... oh forget it |

Well I did it again, but this time just a little bit that was hanging over the edge that I didn't notice. I tried the fabric softener sheet and WOW! Not to mention the smell was wonderful. My iron cleaner has a stench about it that was still in my sewing room the next day. I ironed over the fabric softener sheet and now all I smell is Emerald Stream or whatever my fabric softener smell is.

Is that a garment sewing show? I don't have the DIY channel but I can get it. I miss the garment sewing shows tha use to be on. I get Sewing With Nancy but sometimes thats emb. and quilting (nothing wrong with that) but would like a show that focuses on garment construction. Thanks. Well I looked it up and we don't get the DIY station on our cable. That looks like it'd be a good sewing show-darn!!! |

This has nothing to do with cleaning an iron. Think that was covered nicely. I want DIY channel but in order to get it I'd have to take lots of other crappy channels that we'd never watch & it's an expensive add on. Guess that's the only way to sell bad channels is to put one good one with the lousy ones. I'm not a cheapo, just hate to be taken for a ride. Am I the only one that feels that way? |

No Beachgirl, you are not the only one. I wish you could add on the channels you want to the basic package. Even if I had to choose a certain amount and pay what I am paying now there are several trades I would make. We have a dish, rather than cable. Dorothy |

For those of you who can't get the DIY Network on your cable system, here is a link to their website that goes to the "Sewing for the Home" page. There are even some small video clips they have posted so you can actually see a clip from the shows! I refer to it often, and some of the instructions given on the shows are posted and can be printed out for your personal use. Hope this will be helpful! http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/pac_ctnt/text/0,2019,DIY_14161_35451,00.html Cookie

Beachgirl, I'm with you, I wish I could just pick and choose the channels I want, and pay for those ones, then I'd be happy. I mean honestly, does any one watch the golf channel?? I used to get Sewing with Nancy, at 4"30am on Fridays, now I can't even find that. And we have 66 channels. I liked HGTV but now all they have is home redecorating/decorating shows, that gets really boring.

I never worry about buying myself things I need to make my sewing/crafting easier - providing it's in my budget of course. After all, the men sure don't mind buying "tools" because "they need them" so I consider my sewing supplies as tools! Works for me! Of course, I have a huge wish list of things that I would like to have that will have to wait until I win "the big one" - but I keep forgetting to buy the lottery tickets! Guess I'm just not much of a gambler! Sewing and crafting shows seem to be on the decline in spite of the fact that the interest is increasing. The TV programmers are just not keeping up. Linda MacPhee was in Toronto and she said if you pitch a new show to a TV producer and it has the work "sew" or "quilt" in it, they won't hear any more of your idea. That's why she calls her new show "Linda MacPhee's Workshop" and pitched as a "fabric artist" show. That was the only way she could get it on tv. Sad but true! Violet I've decided to live forever - so far, so good.

Mamahoogie, I'm with you. DH has his work shop & I have my sewing room. Some of the tools we share even. Like the laser level & other laser things, the square & other rulers. Yesterday I bought a 72 ft ruler for some of the quilts I make. Carpentery & sewing use so much of the same tools plus the math. A lot of the carpenter tools are made better than the sewing ones & are even cheaper at times. If only I could cut out my material on the band saw. LOL. |

Hey all I love how you got off the topic of me being an idiot. I really need one of those teflon pressing sheets. How much do they cost? What part of the store would they be in? I have never seen them. As for cable TV. We had to buy it just to get the basic channels. You know the ones that are supposed to be free. Couldn't get a decent signal without cable. I would love if they would get with it and let us pick which channels we want. They could set a price for 20 channels maybe setting a limit on how many premium ones you could have. I could actually get away with less than twenty. Beyond the major networks and PBS I need TLC, HGTV, Nick Jr., Discovery and Animal Planet. Of course I would love to have the DIY channel too. Hubby of course wants ESPN and SciFi. The rest of the channels on our TV hardly ever get watched. Gina

Okay, I have to commiserate about the cable channels. My cable company really ticked me off earlier this year...I wanted to cancel the whole thing, but my husband wouldn't let me. I used to watch the international news channel all the time, and then one day it was gone. What did they put in its place??? Another stinkin' shopping channel! My news channel was moved to digital cable, so if I want it I have to subscribe to that(more money out of my pocket). I have been paying for and getting a channel I want, and they take it away, raise my cable rate, and expect me to pay for a network where someone tries to sell me something I don't want or need! Essentially, I am paying to let people advertise in my home! They should be paying me to watch! Anyway...I keep deleting the shopping channels from my TV, and new ones keep popping up. Grrrrrrrr. Double Grrrrrrrr. Gina, I would guess that the teflon pressing sheet would be with the irons and pressing equipment in stores like Jo-ann's and Hancocks...or maybe with the fusibles. I don't think I've seen them either, except on TV...but *not* on a shopping channel! Take care,

I have 2 & know I ordered the first one, I think from Clotilde. Nancy's notions sells them also. I "think " Jo Ann's sells them. They aren't real expensive. Do you know you can bake cookies on them & they just slide off the pan ? Have a separate one just for baking though. Both mine are for pressing sticky stuff or useing hot glue. Glue doesn't stick to it. |

I just found those teflon pressing sheets the other day in a store, it was $12.99Cdn and only 8x10 size, which I thought was kind of pricey, but since I just finished ironing the wrong side of the fusible interfacing AND melting my heat resistant cloth which is under my ironing cloth - at the same time - don't ask - I'm an idiot too - I think I may have to go get one

JoAnn's sells the teflon ironing sheet in the notion dept. They are small and pricey, but if you can wait till notions go on sale it might be worth it. They should be with all the pressing aides, such as the pressing hams, pants legs presser boards, etc. I have used parchment paper as a pressing cloth.

Pudge...I've re-used a sheet of parchment paper over and over until it got too crinkled or too much fusible stuff on it. When I used it I put a sheet down first to cover my ironing board, then placed what I was ironing and then used another sheet on top. Just make sure that you always use the same side facing the iron and the ironing board. I mark the sheets. Otherwise you could get the residue from previous fusibles on your iron or on the board.
