What's the secret to creating perfect square corners?

I have tried stitching to within 1/2 in of the corner then, with the needle in the material, raising the foot and turning the square piece of material 90 degrees, lowering the foot; and after making sure there is no overlap in the material, continue sewing down the other side. But there is always some kind of pucker in the resulting corner.

Should I stitch all the way to the end, remove the piece, turn it and start a new stitch line down the other side? Or just stitch to a 1/2, lock the stitch, remove the piece, turn it 90 degrees and repeat the process?

Try taking 2 little diagnol stitches in the corner- I usually handwalk these stitches. Also trim and grade seams in that area real good.

I take those two stitches for light fabric, three, even four, for heavier fabric. trim the corners close. And you will always get a cleaner fold if you press the seams open, even if they do not show.
I have a wooden tool made to "finger press" those 1/4 inch seams on quilt blocks open. It is a square in shape around it and a few inches long with a point at the end so I can push it up into the corners and press seams open on it.
Once you get the corner turned press it lightly. Hit it hard with steam and put something heavy on it. (I have marble bookends).
Oh yeah -- when you trim the corners -- cut diagonally across them.

You mean must tack the corner down before sewing around the square? Sounds simple enough; why didn't I think of that
