Hello fellow Canadians

I posted here as I suspect there are more readers than in sewing machine section and I need a quick answer. :bluewink:
Has anybody had a used sewing machine mailed to them from US (like an ebay product or relative, or whatever)?
Does one pay GST on used goods? Duty?
What is the cheapest way to do this? I have a line on a Singer Featherweight. :nah:

Thanks for speedy replies!

Nancy, I know that in BC you must pay gst and pst even on used items which totally p***es me off. You shouldn't have to pay duty on a used item, but that also depends on where it is manufactured. You can try calling them, here's the website, hope you can get some info from it. http://sbinfocanada.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca%2Fgeneral%2Fpublications%2Fcustoms_tari ff-e.html

If the item is being mailed, you can get up to $60 Cdn without paying duty on certain items. Like I said, check out the website, or call them, there is a 1-800 number. Too bad you weren't close to the border like I am. I just have everything sent to Sumas Wash. then scoot over the border, if its $50 Cdn or less, no duty no tax, over that, I take someone with me, then I get $100 Cdn. Course, over that, you pay gst/pst and sometimes duty.

Thanks for the info, Laura. I have relatives in Federal Way, but I would have to wait too long before our next visit to receive the machine. The seller is going to list the machine as a gift (!) to see what happens with the taxes. The exchange is enough to kill anyone without the taxes. I am excited to be getting this so should make up for the missed Christmas trip to Toronto which I thought was just too expensive this year as I missed any seat sales! :bluesad:

I just thought, perhaps I should have waited until after the election - one of the parties may have promised free postage as well as lower taxes!! :bluewink:

Nancy, when I was participating in one of the swaps, I had an issue with Customs. I was charged GST and PST on the package even though it was marked a gift. I contacted CCRA and was able to get it reimbursed but was told that gifts up to $60 are tax and duty free. Even for gifts that are more than that you can expect to pay something.
