I seem to be having a problem with centering my designs on sweatshirts. I normally don't hoop. I'm able to get them centered from side to side on the front of the shirt, but it doesn't look level across the design. Does anyone have an idea of how to help me mark the shirt or any other suggestions? I would appreciate any input. I do have an 'embroidery buddy' but I think it works for centering on the chest/breast pocket area...not on center...unless I'm not using it right. Any help or ideas?
Thanks!

I do one of 2 things. Sometimes I try on the sweat shirt, have my template of the design & mark a center dot where I want it, or lay the sweatshirt down on a table & measure from side to side to find the center across the front. Lightly mark that spot & center the design at that point. If it's to high up or too low then go straight up or down where I want the design to be then mark the template as it should be. If the template is straight then the design will be straight. Hope I haven't confused you, I could show you better than trying to write it out. :re:

I measure very much like Beachgirl. I decide where I want the design to be and then I measure down from the neckband where the front and back seams meet. I do that on both sides and make a chalk mark (I prefer the loose white chalk with the wheel because it is fine.) I double check my measurments and if they are the same I take a ruler longer than my hoop and I draw across from one line to the other. I then measure across on that line and split the amount in half. I make a small mark and draw a 90 degree line up and down so that I have a cross in the center of my garment. My machine has templates which I can place on these marks to help me put the garment on the sprayed hool. If I don't use that, I print a picture of the design in actual size. Using a lamp I look through the design to determing the centers in the designs and I fold it. I then just match the folds to the chalk lines on the garment. The print out is also nice because it gives you a chance to "sort of" see what the garment will look like when it is done.

I like the Hoopin Buddy for placement on the side of the shirt. I haven't thought of using it for center placement but you might find that it works well for that (not sure).

There is an item related to the Hoopin Buddy that looks like the front of a shirt. You can place your hoops in a stationary position on this gizmo for it to hold in place. Then you slip your shirt onto the gizmo and when it is placed, it is centered and your hoop is straight (if you do it right). It works very well for hoopless embroidery. (I think it would probably also work for hooped work. An extra large retails for around $90. I bought one just because I had a chance to get it for half price on a special sale. It works well (if you think to use it and it fits the size shirt you are doing.) I understand that several women have made a similar item out of peg board using a shirt for that is often used in painting shirts for a template. That would be a great way to do it if you are creative.

I do pretty much like everyone else. (I'm chesty, so is my sister). So I always try on the shirt, look in the mirror. MARK it with a pen (either the wash out or fadeaway). My hoops have plastic graphs in the middle, if I don't need that, the edges of the hoops have marks for the middle of each side. I just feel around. (If the shirt I'm doing is small...I make my husband try it on :bg: to get the center)
