Okay I am not one of the lucky people to have an embroidery machine but I am thinking about buying one. My question is this, the computer you hook it up too. I know I can hook it up to this one, but I am thinking about a notebook to use? So I guess I am asking what do all of you do? If I do decided to buy a notebook, what do I really need? Until I can move back to my house, this computer is in the dining room area, and the sewing room is in the back of the house. I can't move the computer back there, and I know I can hook and unhook from this one. I really do not want to be moving the machine back and forth all the time. I would rather just have it set up to stay in one place.

I use a Toshiba laptop and I"m very happy with it. However, the computer you need could be determined by your software. There are some softwares that use ports that are no longer available on the machines (esp. if you get an older version.) If you purchase a laptop or notebook now, just make sure that your software will be compatable. You are probably better off to consider a software that works for the laptop rather than a laptop with outdated technology to match the software. pam

From what I have read I need a USB port and Windows XP. Is this right?

If your(embroidery/sewing) machine uses a USB port..yes...XP certainly. Would be a good thing to have a CD burner. (for all those patterns you WANT to save) . Flashcard slot too...(some s/e machines use flashcards too) Memorystick too (some of the newer machines use those too). Get the fastest with the MOST memory you can. Chrys

Most all of the newer programs take the USB port and that is where I would aim. Artista V3 can't use the USB port and it is hard to convert backwards. Artista V4 uses USB port only. Most all the newer programs should be fine with XP for the system program. I don't know about all the programs, but Artista eats a lot of access memory space (the working space in the computer.) The more that you have the better....plus you will want a storage programs for those designs that you download or purchase. pam

just want to clarify... you don't NEED a computer in order to run an embroidery machine... it does help as far as being able to download designs off the internet and if you buy a reader/writer box, you can then transfer those design you download, to a card using your reader/writer box... but most machines do not "Require" a computer in order to run them... so your computer and your machine do not necessarily have to be in the same room... it does make life more convenient.. but its generally not required... MO life is too short, not to explore

Summer and I seem to be doing the same type of research right now. "Santa" has been on me to check out embroidery machines, and he has also been checking consumer reviews online about a few of them too! Guess I know what I might be getting for Christmas! A few of the machines I have checked out will use EITHER a USB port to hook up OR their own flash card unit. The machine I want has to be hooked up to the computer to do any embroidery because the machine itself doesn't have any on-board memory. I don't mind that. Our local sewing machine dealer has an arrangement with a local computer store: they refer customers to the computer store where they sell completely refurbished used laptops starting at about $200. This might be the direction we're going to take after the holidays. Oh, and the reason I want the machine I've picked out? The SOFTWARE program it comes with-I'll be able to edit and embroider my own designs, and it's very compatible with the graphics program I already have! Cookie

I'm looking at the Singer Quantum Futura CE 200. I was going to get the CE 100, but after checking out the CE 200 at my Singer Store, and comparing it to the Brother machines they have, I've decided that the CE 200 will be the right match for what I want to do. Actually, it will be the right match for what my "Santa" wants me to do...LOL!

Ladyslopokes, I have the CE 100. The only difference in the 100 and the 200 is the number of built in embroidery stitches (which I do not need or use) because I have a Pfaff 2046 and a Quantum 3400 with a total of about 300 or 400 built in stitches between the 2 that i very, very seldom use) and my dealer sold me the digitizing software at a very low price. Anyway, quite a few people have had problems with the Futura bobbin assembly, but I've not had a problem and my Futura is now 1 year old and yes, you do have to have a computer to run it as it won't embroider any other way. I have my own computer in my sewing room so that was not a problem. The thing I like best about my Futura is that we didn't invest an arm and a leg and I don't feel like I have to use it day in and day out to get my money's worth. Patsy Patsy
