We were woken this morning at 6 am The house shook and I thought something had hit it. Tony said it was just the wind but the day was as still as a church mouse. He trolled around the estate and could find nothing wrong (just in case the boiler had blown up or anything). When we got to church we discovered an oil depot 30 miles away had exploded. The sound shock wave carried as far as Holland and Northern France due to an inversion layer.
It appears that by the grace of God, 4 people are serious injured and 30 have minor injuries - no fatalities that we know of so far. The black plume is spreading south and westand has now reached London. Pictures here http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_pictures/4518026.stm

Jan that is really scary to wake up to that big boommm When I lived in Chalmette we lived across the street from one of these storage ficilities and they had us on the edge of our seats all the time with those darn things. There was always a fire going on in one of those refineries I lived between two of them, and no one wanted to make them accountable for the safety issues because it was two of the largest employers in the area and people needed to work so we lived with it. One of the large tanks spilled oil all over the place during the hurricane, not only did the place smell like the marsh it smelled like crude oil. YUCK!!!!!! Glad you and Tony and the girls are safe. How does it feel to have run of the house now that the girls are off away doing their little thing. Must be nice!!!!!!!! Hugs Susie
I'm regressing back into my youth, I just have to figure out how I'm going to convience my body to come along with me.

Saw it on the news...whata mess....good thing you only FELT it. [[[ ]]]

I live near the AF bombing range...my house and I shake on a regular basis.
Sometimes they tell us, sometimes NOT. Last week it was the Canadians (they like to play here in the winter where theres no snow  ) and some pilots and planes from Singapore.
At least WE ALL know what it is...and it's not really dangerous (they don't set the forrest on fire very often...and the range is H U G E ).

I'm hearing on the tv this morning that several of the tanks are on fire and they are going to let them burn out. The air there must really be toxic. HOLD YOUR BREATHE JAN!!!!!!!!!!!

Smoke was all blowing he other way so no problems here - a fellow teacher lived 6 miles away and the blast blew his doors open. sheesh. I thought they had all burnt out by now - burned for 4 days - where is International Rescue when you need them!

Susie - they all come home this weekend so it's invasion time -it has been sooo peaceful here without them, but I'm looking forward to the return.

Holy smoke Jan!!! that's a major fire/explosion!! Glad to hear all are ok, and pretty amazing that the injuries were as small as they were, that could have been a major disaster!

The impact on the locals has been significant. Homes destroyed, schools closed, businesses unable to operate. It's a small thing in comparison with the tsunami or what happened to USA in August, but it has really hit people. A payroll company's building was destroyed and unless they get the back-up tapes up and running (they are stored near Heathrow airport) over 200,000 government employees will not get paid on time this month.

The fire crews and the rest of the emergency services did an excellent job. I don't think they get the credit they deserve.

What's so frightening is that if it had happened on a work day during "normal" working hours there would have been so many casualties, even fatalities.

The number of casualties is astonishingly low, but as you say the impact on the area and beyond is large. Our hospital in Cambridge may be one of those affected by the wages problem - a major local employer - we are waitng to see.

Is that Addenbrooks? Didn't they lose some of their patient records?

Myself and my hubby will be two of the civil servants that won't get paid if they don't sort the payrolls out :bluesad: but at least we have a roof over our heads.

Yes, Tony works on the addenbrooks site - I think they have the records backed up somewhere.
