OK so here is the deal. I am a lefty, taught to crochet by my lefty mother who was taught by her lefty mother and so on. My righty son now wants to learn. He is willing to try and learn left-handed but I am not sure that is the way to go.
I spent a good part of my highschool time teaching Lefties how to do different crafts. My crafts teacher actually pulled me out of other classes to teach and I even came back after I graduated to help her out. But never in my life did I think that being lefty would make it impossible to teach someone. :bang: :bang: :bang:
Do they make books for kids to teach themselves how to crochet? I think that would be the best thing for him.
Suggestions for how to teach him would be greatly appreciated.

Yes there are books. For the right handed person. Just don't look for lefty ( I'm one too). Joanns has kits with instructions for Knitting and Crocheting.

I should also say I taught myself to crochet because I couldn't learn from my right handed mother, grandmother or great grandmother. But my son did learn to crochet by watching me and doing it with his right hand.

If he sits across from you instead of next to you and does a mirror image thing it might help. Along with a book.

Gina,
Get a large mirror.. Have him watch in the mirror and you show him how to start and do it slowly. This will reverse it for him.. That is the way I learned.. I am a southpaw also.. But be sure he watches in the mirror, not directly at your hands.. :bg: :bg:

I taught DD to crochet and she is the lefty in the house. She would sit facing me and watch and even hold onto the hook at times to get the feel of things. I've seen many teach yourself books on crochet. One of my favorite sites is http://www.crochetville.org/forum/index.php? It has lots of tutorials and links to sites for further info.

sewingrandma,

My husband is going to be fuming with you when he gets wind of what I found after clicking on your link.Wire Crochet (http://www.seafore.com/wire/wire.html). I need another craft like I need another hole in my head but this looks so fun. I should be able to reason it with him because I already have the stuff. I have the wire for beading. And I have more crochet hooks than any one person really needs.

Gina, that is an awesome link. I didn't look for anything else but "regular" crochet as like you I have more irons in the fire than I can manage most times. I already have to push boxes out of the way to get into my sewing/craft room.

Gina, I don't know if you have seen this before, but here is a really neat site that has crochet lessons and they have video clips of someone doing the stitches. There is left handed and right handed video clips

Hope they help your son!
