I hear you Chrys. :bluesad: I replaced my printer about 3 weeks ago. My first printer (black and white and small enough to fit in tote with lap top to go to grad school) 12 years ago cost me $450 and the ink seemed to go forever. As I got more into writing and developing teaching tools I got a new printer and ended up giving the little black only, still working but leaking ink, to some charitable group (with 2 never used ink cartridges!). I did try to give to a student in need but they only wanted colour! Several printers later my printer cost less but the ink cartridges cost $49 for colour and $59 for black. That printer stopped working on me last month. I did have some, what I thought were refilled, cartridges on hand but nothing worked. Phone calls around suggested it may be the print head and the only way to rule it out was to get new cartridges. Printers were on sale that week for $175, complete with cartridges. Not the same make as my dead one, but could do a lot more, included a scanner (I already had one of those - but slow, slow, slow), and the cartridges were to be only $25 each. It seems that electronic devices are getting cheaper but the manufacturers keep you broke maintaining them!!
Before I retired I bought a new computer (on faculty pay plan) which was to be my last computer. I am told it likely will not be.

Printers aren't the only bit of technology to make you really crazy.... my dh has a server which was put together for him by a friend. He uses it to store very large video files which he offers for sale on his website. Needless to say, the *&@#+ thing is constantly going down, which requires a trip to the computer repair guy, who cites a long list of its ailments, along with the price tag to go with the repairs.... every time I get close to paying off the credit card, dear little server flips its lid again! arrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggggghhhhh!

The computer techie guy I use, said, don't ever bother trying to repair a printer, they are so expensive to fix, its cheaper to go buy a new one. Kind of like a disposable razor, use it til it doesn't work any more and toss it. Makes you kind of nauseated to think of all that stuff going into the garbage.

Yeah I know...my husband is a 'geek'...did it in the AF and is doing it FOR the AF as a civilian now. My sister is also a geek....I seem to be the only computer idiot in the family..but I have other 'finer' qualities than talking to inannimate objects and TRYING to make them work... :throw:
He put the 10 yr old printer on for me ....loads fast, prints like a slow boat from china, but it PRINTS !!!

It doesn't matter, the minute you buy electronics of ANY kind, they're out of date already....sad really when you think about it.
(if this were REALLY 'Logans Run', those of us over 30 would be dead...like our computers... :bluesad: ) :re:

Wal-Mart is always selling printers for under $30.00. I have a very nice HP Photosmart but the artridges are like $70.00 for both. I tried one of the $30.00 machines and could not see a difference in the quality so noq I buy a new printer nd not the cartridges. I give my old printer (box it came in and all the paperwork to a friend that yard sales and attend a grand flea market he sells them for like $10.00 and we split that in half and enjoy the extra money.
