Now I have another question or 3 - good thing you are all so understanding about us newbies! The runner I'm doing is green, gold, red fabrics and one with all three colors in it. It is three Ohio Stars in a row with borders around them. So, what color thread do I quilt in? I'm machine quilting, so I use quilting thread, but do I use that in the bobbin as well, or do I use bobbin thread, or regular thread. OK, I think that's it for now. Thanks everyone!

The colour of thread you use depends on what effect you want. If you want your stitching to show, you use a colour that will stand out. If you don't, you use a thread that will blend in and not stand out. If you are doing free motion quilting, I would suggest a thread that blends in as generally first time machine quilters don't want to emphasize their quilting.

As to the bobbin thread, I usually apply the same principle. So you can use different threads top and bottom. What you really need to do is to take some scraps of the fabrics used and make a little quilt sandwich and test out your quilting. Generally you have to play a bit to get the right tension, e.g. if using different colours top and bottom, you want to try not to have the bottom showing on top and the top showing on the bottom. With free motion quilting, it is sometimes hard to get a happy medium. If something shows, I prefer that it shows on the bottom.

Re the type of thread...I sometimes use 40wt thread on top and usually 50 wt in the bobbin if I want the stitching to show like in wall hangings. In my Christmas quilt that I just finished I used 40 wt varigated thread for my ribbon design and the bottom was solid red 50 wt. But most of the time I use 50 wt top and bottom. It doesn't show up the errors as much and it is cheaper too.

Hope this helps.

So, if I don't really want the colors to show too much, then for the darker areas, the green and reds, I'd have to switch to a darker color, then back to a lighter color for the cream areas? I think I'll be doing lots of sandwiches! But thanks Judee, it gives me some direction that's for sure.
