I bought some elastic that has a draw string through it but I don't know how to put it in the lounge pants I'm making. The lady at Hancock's told me I needed to stretch it out as I sew...BUT...do I use that as the waistband or do I put it in a casing like I do with the regular elastic? If I put it in a casing, how do I go about doing that? She mentioned that I need to measure the waist and add 2 inches. I'm just not sure how to do this so if anyone has any ideas to help, I'd appreciate it!
Thanks.

I have used this stuff and it seems to me that I did a casing like regular elastic, but put in two smaller button hole on the turn down portion of the casings (next to your belly, with a little bit of interfacing) and then basically treated it the same as I would the regular stuff, except when I joined the ends I cut the channel holding the string back a little so it would come out the holes fairly even and not bind, and the string would hang inside the pants when you tied it.

I use this stuff all the time now that I've figured out how to work it. Nancy Zieman has it in one of her books and the first time I really messed it up, but now I love it. You need to decided if you want the drawstring on the inside or outside of the pants. Then make two little buttonholes close to the center seam of the front of the pant (one on each side of the seam). Make sure that they will be in the center of the folded over casing (width). Measure your elastic around the waist and take off 2". Cut the threads of the drawstring casing along the topside of the casing back about 1' on each side, so that the drawstring can actually be pulled up out of the way. Then sew your elastic together into a circle - I use a small square of muslin or cotton underneath the elastic and butt the two ends together over the small square, then do a multiple stitch zigzag across the two ends. Keep the drawstring ends out of the way of your stitching. Now you have a circle of elastic with the drawstring ends loose. Insert the drawstrings through the buttonholes, fold over the casing then stitch the casing into place, using a zipper foot to run along the edge of the elastic, NOT catching it into the casing. As you sew, you don't need to stretch out the elastic at all, when you get near the end, you just pull the fabric around, so that it bunches up behind your sewing, and you still have a flat area to sew on. That's it! If this doesn't make much sense let me know and I'll try to explain it differently or draw you some pictures. I have done this as well by sewing the elastic edge along the outer edge of the fabric, then turning it over and sewing it in again so that it is stationary, but I like the other way much better. You don't have to worry about the elastic getting stretched out of shape. If I want to tack the drawstrings, I do it at the centre back seam.

Thank you SO much, Bridesmom! I'm going to print out your instructions and keep it with my 'stuff' so that when I get time after the holidays to try it, I'll have it in front of me to refer back to. I know this looks like wonderful elastic so I'll be anxious to try it.
Thanks again....I learn SO much from this site. Thanks to all!
Merry Christmas!!
