Hi there everyone! I'm not sure where to post my first post, so I picked here as it looks like the most active area.

I'm single, 32, and have recently gotten addicted to sewing. I have dabbled in making baby clothes and toddler clothes for my friends kids - they came out pretty good. Then I tried a dress for myself - it pretty much looked terrible - not because I did it wrong, but because the pattern wasn't very good. Then I tried a pair of capri pants for myself - and the funny thing is...the pockets ended up down by the ankles. Hahah...my mom thought this was hillarious and coined the term "Ankle Pocket". :bg:

For Christmas my dad got me an Embroidery Machine and I'm soooo thrilled. Right now I'm working on a Roman Square quilt, and then I'm going to use my new toy to embroider on the front of it.

I'm so seriously addicted to this stuff at this point...that its crazy. Hahaha. It's alot of fun! I will need some help from all you sewing wiz kids because I'm sorta just figuring out as I go. Haven't taken a sewing class yet or anything.

Anyway! It's nice to be here! I hope you don't mind if I jump into threads and ask questions! :bg:

Maddie, I am new also. I never took any sewing classes, but i worked for years in the garment industry before they were all sent to Mexico. I learned a lot by trial and error, just by jumping in and doing. Practice, practice, practice.
A lot has to do with your fabric, some patterns just don't look good with some fabrics. Also, it is a lot easier to adjust your pattern, than to try and make a garment fit after you make it. Find yourself a good book on sewing. It can really help.

I think most of are self taught by trial and error with maybe high school Home Ec and a book or two.
I always tell everyone just take it slow and expect to screw up a few things now and then.

Hi Maddie, just jump in and ask questions - often you will find the question has been asked before and it is quicker to search the message boards rather than waiting for a reply. Having said that,we are a bunch who like to give advice - and in all fairness, we have all had our share of disasters.
So welcome! have a cookie and I think the only real rule we have here is respect each other.

Welcome Maddie!! Jump in we all do! These message boards are the best, everyone helps each other and it is a very freindly (and we will keep it that way) place. Oh, can I borrow your Dad in Feb.? I have a birthday and I have been sewing about 25 years or so and I desperately want an embroidary machine, even the little Mickey Mouse Brother machine.

Enjoy the addiction, I tell many friends I was an alcoholic and drug user (abuser) for many years and this addiction is one I can live with. Every time I spend any money on sewing i tell myself I always found the money for drugs and tis habit is not only fun, it is therapeutic and helps me not harms me like the booze and drugs did in years past. I have also been smoke (cigarettes) free 6 months Jan 6th so there is even more money I wasted I can now apply to sewing and crafting and gifts at Christmas.

gm, how in the world did you quit smoking? I have tried everything, just about. Maybe I just don't want to badly enough yet.

I had 5 heart attacks and 2 bouts of cancer and my doctor was giving me abunch of lectures. I had tried to quit at least 40 times in my life but I told myself that I would have a short life so why not enjoy it and do what i want to. Finally the doctor shook her head and said what are we going to do to get you to stop smoking. I told her if she sent me to their quit smoking clinic I would try again, honestly when I left her office I said I will go to the clinic, listen to their bull again and keep smoking and tell the doctor the next visit I tried, I failed and I quit, quiting.

At the clinic thye gave me the patch and gum to use for two weeks. I used them one week. Their thoughts were to get off the gum and patch because you are still getting nicotine. After three days (the usual time I gave up smoking in the past) I thought how unlike it was then the other times, I really felt I could stop this time. Then after two weeks my son called I told him I was quitting ad he said if I could quit after 40+ years he could quit, he has done it also. I got a double benefit for quitting. Mind you, during the time I quit I live with a smoker, a 3-4 pack a day smoker and that did make it harder but it also made me so proud that I could quit.

I still get cravings for cigarettes but they last about as long as it takes me to feel them. During the rough part I honestly prayed to God to give me strength and He did. I believe if you are doing something that will be good for you and others God is more than willing to see you through it. Plus God loves it when you tell people He gave you the strength to quit.

That is all I can tell you. Jan. 4th 2006 will be 6 months and I am looking forward to July 4th to claim my one year victory.

You are right aout you have to want to but in my case I have always been one to go against the rules.

I do wish you luck and let me knw if you decide to try again, I would love to support you and pray for you. peace

I was like gm when I quit. I didn't really want to but it just got to be a matter of pure stubbornness and I quit nearly 16 years ago. And nearly every day when I think about smoking I am glad I don't.

Maddie we all know you can quit smoking. It will be the best thing you ever do for yourself. No one here will nag you about it but if you decide to quit, we'll all be here to support you in anyway we can and cheer you on. Ask Mother-In-Law. I think she quit smoking right after she became a permanent resident here.

Patsy,
Are you sue she became a "permanent resident" here and not at "ANOTHER" type of house???? :BG: LOVE YOU SUSIE!?!?!?!?!?!? :bluewink: (hehehe)
After the year that MIL has had, I hope that she finds the will power to not start back up. I know she is a strong person, so if MIL can stop and STAY away from them, I know anyone can. Plus, I think she would chew anyones backside off if they started up again!!!!!!
Take away her Sewing Machines and Swimming Pool and you create a MONSTER!!!!!!!

ssshhhhhhhssshhhh Sewhappie -- you'll hurt Susie's feelings. I don't know if I could survive what she has survived this year and still seems to have a sense of humor about it. I would definitely have started smoking again given her circumstances the last 6 months.
