My mom, my sister, and my cousin were in a hospital waiting room last night because my mom's sister had a heart attack and is in ICU. Family members are taking turns staying there. About 1:30 a.m. my mom and cousin were sleeping and my sister said she was about to doze off when she felt like someone was looking at her. She opened her eyes and a woman was standing beside my mother. She saw my sister was awake and grabbed mother's purse and ran.
My sister screamed and chased after her. My mom and cousin jumped up and ran after them. Mother said my sister almost caught the woman but she dashed into a stairwell and got onto the elevator on another floor and got away.
If any of you knew my sister, you would know why I'm so amazed at her. She's always been afraid of everything. She was running and screaming at the woman to give back her mother's purse. Mother asked her what she would have done if she had caught the woman and she said she would have put her on the floor.
A security guard got there within a few seconds but didn't catch the woman. They have it all on video. It made the news tonight.
The policeman that took the report watched the video of my sister chasing the woman and told the guard he should hire my sister. :bluewink:
Luckily mother only had $30 in her purse, but she had to cancel her credit cards and notify the bank that her checkbook was stolen. My dad was changing their house locks today because mother's keys were in her purse. She also had a book.... "Chicken Soup for the Christian Soul". Mother said maybe the thief will read it. :re: I'm pretty sure she ditched the purse and just took the wallet.
My mom said she wished I had been there because she thinks I would have caught the woman. My son is always trying to teach me karate and self defense. :bluewink: I said no, if I had been there I would have reminded you to keep your purse out of sight and attached to your arm. I've always been paranoid when people I'm with put their purse down in public or lay it in their shopping cart.

Everyone be aware of your surroundings, especially this time of year.

Bama, what a horrid experience for your mother when she was feeling so vulnerable anyway. I hope the feeling of being violated doesn't stay with her. Way to go sis, we never know just how we will act in a crisis until the crisis is on us.. Peace to you and your family.

For heavens sake...people get worse all the time...I'm so sorry Bama.
Just remember what goes around, comes around and the thief will get her just desserts.

It's like this guy last week, they had his pic on t.v., so they could catch him. He was STEALING toys and Christmas ornaments off PEOPLES graves...right in the daylight. He wasn't even being sneaky about it. He took toys off one poor little boys grave 3 times. His Mother appealed to the t.v. audience to please turn him in. And they did....he was actually SELLING the stuff he stole from dead people.

Bama I hope your family will be Ok, dispite the meanness of others.

Bama, I'm so sorry about your mom being in the hospital and the theft. It's so sad, the grinches that are around to spoil things. Like Kath said, they will get their just desserts. Hope they catch her fast and mom is up and out of there really fast.

Bama, how terrible! But, thankfully everyone is safe! That's the important thing. It's sad that these things happen in places you figure it's safe-like a hospital! Hope your aunt is doing well!

This is terrible. Last summer my dad was in the hospital in Decatur, and my stepsister was planning on staying the night in the waiting room. The guard told her to go home, as in that neighborhood, all hospital doors were locked at night, except the emergency room. But that the homeless sneaked in to sleep on the sofas, and he could not guarantee her safety. What is this world coming to, that you aren't even safe in a hosptial? Terrible

I've heard of this happening to patients. Thieves slip into the rooms and steal the patients' belongings from the closets. It seems shameful, but thieves have no shame.
Take care,

Terrible what people will do to other people! What a horrible experience for them all. What goes around, comes around and some day that thief will get hers. Take care all and yes, watch your purses. When we get groceries I either use the kiddie clips to clip my purse on or I tie it on if the clips are broken. ....Stealing toys from graves and selling them - that is one of the all time lows!!!!

Here in Oklahoma City it is common for the "Toys for Tots" boxes to be robbed and the merchandise sold on the street or put on e-bay. That is really low as those toys are for children that won't otherwise get anything for Christmas.

My mom just called and said that some nurses in the hospital watched the video and identified the woman. Her father is in the hospital and she had been sitting with him for several days. They issued a warrent for her arrest. She hasn't been back and her father is in critical condition. What an idiot. She must have been very desperate to do something so stupid.

So sorry to hear about what happened to your mother. The hospital I work in locks all the doors except the front one at 6 PM. You have to have a coded key card to get in. There are guards on every floor. But they still tell people to be careful.

The suspect has been arrested on a different charge. My mom and sis went to the police station today to identify her and press charges for stealing mom's purse. Mother didn't get anything from her purse back, but at least the woman has been stopped from stealing from other people. For now anyway. :nervous:
