Heather welcome to Sew-Whats-New. In my opinion, $100 plus shipping for that Brother Applique Station is a waste and you'll end up disappointed. Keep your $100 + and apply it to a real embroidery machine. My advice, for whatever it's worth, would be to look around, check out your local dealers to see what is available in the price range you're thinking about and then make a decision. You may want an embroidery only machine or you may want a combination sewing/embroidery machine. The choices are varied and many and the prices ranges generally start at around $499 for the Brother PE-150 and go up from there to anywhere just shy of $8,000 or $9,000 for the top of the line Berninas, Pfaffs and Vikings. Take your time and be sure you get what you want. My best advice would be to go with a dealer for support rather than on-line. Patsy Patsy

Hi Heather and welcome to the group! There's quite a few of us who embroider, and I know that Chrysantha will have some awesome suggestions when she gets on line. I have an older Bernina Deco 500 which my sister passed on to me, as she upgraded to the Artista. She really likes Bernina, and I am quite enjoying it for a beginner machine. Though I can see there are things I can't do with this that I'd like to, so hopefully someday I will be able to upgrade. As far as the Brother, I don't know anything, but I know you'll get great info here.

My suggestions are just like all the others...seek out a DEALER. They do have new machines and trade-in's. Buying online may seem cheaper , but in the long run you'll be doing yourself a disservice. Dealers will sell you a QUALITY machine, service it, if they own a fabric shop too, lesssons are usually free. They often become your 'friend' in the business and give you 'deals'. Stay away from 'unknown' brands...stick with a 'name' Bernina, Janome, Babylock,Kenmore (which is Janome), Viking, Pfaff, Elna... (Sears sells Kenmore, but no one there sews....so if you buy from there, make sure you TEST one before buying and make sure you have repair service). Look before you leap into buying an embroidery machine. It's like a car. Theres something for everyone, but not everyone wants an expensive hobby. You have to consider hoop size, hoops, stabilizer, thread, needles, patterns. Software, hardware...etc...do some studying online FIRST. Then go to dealers and test drive. ASK questions...all the big brands have websites. (they won't have prices, you'll have to ask the dealers for that.), but you can get INFORMATION on all machines. Kath Chrys
