I have been asked to bustle a wedding dress. Normally it would be an easy job but this dress has embellishments that have me stumped. The dress is satin with a netting overlay. The overlay is embroidered with pearls as a border around the hem of the dress, its train and the zipper. The bride wants to pull it up so she can dance. I'm at a loss as to how to tastefully do this. There is no way to match the lace pattern when you pull it up. I'm thinking that it needs to be tucked up underneath the zipper. Any suggestions?

Well, imagine my surprise when I put the dress on my dress form and sat down on the floor to fiddle with the hem some more....it's already had a hook and eye added underneath (just as I proposed). However, it's not nearly as short as the bride indicated she wanted it to be. So I guess that I've solved my question...now she'll have to decide if she wants it shorter.

At least she only wants to dance - I have a feeling I have to make my daughters so she can climb trees in it..

I worked in a bridal shop last summer, and when it came to bustling, anything goes. My colleagues and I created bustles with separate fastenings for different layers, multiple buttons and loops down the back, almost like ruching, and often added clear snaps at the hem to hold featured lace motifs in place. I have to admit my colleagues were all much better and more creative than I was in coming up with these ideas.

Sometimes things just work out. The bride was tickled pink when I told her about the work already done. It's a good thing too because today I sliced my little finger deeply while taking cuttings at our plant nursery. I would have been very hesitant to work on a white wedding dress with a finger heavily bandaged and prone to bleeding without warning.
