We live in small 2-bedroom cottage style house. I'm tight on space and don't have a large table to lay the fabric out for pinning & cutting. I was thinking of getting that large white cutting board (Superboard?) and laying it on the floor. I can't use our kitchen table and don't have the room to open up a large table in the living room. Someone had suggested a card table but it's too small. Any suggestions? I tried to use the living room floor by itself but kept pinning the pattern and material to the rug underneath...can't imagine what would have happened if I started cutting (remember the I Love Lucy episode?) Thank you!!!! I know one of you talented sewers out there has an idea! - Maureen.

Hi Maureen! I don't know if you want to buy a sewing able but I used a coupon to buy one at Joann's that folds down on both sides when not in use, only takes up a few inches of space in my bedroom. I don't have much storage area so it has worked out great. I'm not sure what size it opens to(you could use one side) but I cut and pin my quilts on it. You might check it out. Hope this helps!

I was thinking of the same table. Joann's and Hancock sells these. They do have the plastic super board that goes over it. You can roll it up to keep it out of the way. That you could lay on your living room floor to cut and pin then roll it back up and out of the way. They also have the cardboard super board that folds up and can be stored.

For several years after we married we lived in a one room house. Our living room, bedroom, everything but bath and kitchen were in one space...piano and all. My degree was in home ec and I did a lot of sewing. I bought a folding cardboard cutting board from Hancocks (I think you can get them at most fabric stores and probably Wal Mart) and I cut on the bed for the first seven years and several years afterwards, just because it allowed me the largest space for cutting. It also could be folded and put away easily.

I bought a 5 ft long folding 'conference' table from an office store. It folds up to fit under the bed. ($36.) You can beat it to death and not feel sorry, because you didn't spend that much money.

For years I used a cardboard cutting table from Sew/Fit Company. It folds up to a couple inches thick and slides back in its box. You can get it extra high if you are tall or like it that way (I do). You have to use mats, of course, if you are using a rotary cutter and you can't iron on it. Dorothy |

DorothyL - I checked out the table on their website. That's pretty cool and not too bad pricewise. Can it really hold up to 300#? I don't weigh alot but not too sure about leaning on a "cardboard" table. I like the idea that it folds flat. Thanks everyone for the suggestions!! - Maureen.

Maureen -- I do weigh a lot and I leaned on it for years. I put it up and took it down a lot too. Now it just sits there with a pile of stuff on it. Not 300 pounds though. It is easy to push around too so you can get around it easily when cutting. Your cutting mat -- I use a rotary cutter to cut out everything -- will fit right in the box. I was happy with mine for a long time but I did think it was pricey for cardboard. Dorothy |

Wal-Mart has the cardboard fold-out display boards (like in the trade shows). They're bigger than the grey cutting boards but since I'm not up to using a rotary cutter yet I figured I'd try it out. My 2 1/2 year old dd wants to do "everything like Momma" and have caught her trying to get into my sewing box. I'll wait a little while to get a rotary cutter - I know how sharp they can be - and don't want her playing with it. I'm not interested in any ER trips to the hospital if she gets her hands on one of those. That child can get into anything, even if it has a latch, if she sets her mind to it. I guess I should be glad she's so determined but at 2 1/2, I'm not to sure.....

I was very fortunate to get the Joann's cutting table for my d-day in 2004. It fits perfectly in the empty space between my sewing desk and the mud porch door in our kitchen. It's a real blessing when it comes to pinning and cutting fabric-so much easier on the back and knees! LOL You can even open up just one side of it to use as an extension of your sewing area for large pieces of fabric. I do this very often-so much easier to sew blankets and table covers. They also make an ironing pad for it, but I didn't care for that too much as I couldn't get it to fit tightly enough for my tastes. It can be a bit pricey, but if you catch it on sale it's well worth the investment. We even used it to wrap Christmas gifts on a few weeks ago! Cookie Cookie

My sewing room is approx. 10'x10' so I don't have much room either. I have a 4'x2.5' desk that I have my machine setup on. I bought a 4'X2' folding table that is 28" high with a plastic top and the legs can fold up for my cutting table. I got it at a hardware store for approx. $40 CA. Even though I don't take it down I love it for cutting. I tried one of the folding sewing tables at a quilting store but I am only 5 ' tall and just found it too high for me to be able to comfortably cut using my rotary cutter. Maybe this would be an option.

I also have one of the brown folding conference/banquet tables like Chrys said she bought at an office supply store. You can use the gray fold out card board cutting board or rotary mats on it. It can fold up and stand against a wall, under a bed, in the garage (that's where mine is at the present time) and to make it higher you can cut pieces of pvc pipe the same length and put it under the legs to make it higher. I also have the folding cutting table that I bought at Hancock's and it folds down to 11" when not in use. I also have a small sewing room (11 x 10-1/2) and I keep 1 end of it opened up for my Alto Quiltcut system. Patsy Patsy
