My Bernina's thread holder is on the top of the machine in a horizontal position. I only have the small spools of thread and a few larger ones which I haven't opened yet. I am finding that I have to really watch the thread as it seems to loop and twist as it comes off the spool, then breaks or gets hung up in the tension. Any recommendations?? I can't remember the name of the thread at the moment, but it is good quality and as long as I watch it, things are great. I do have it put on the spool holder the way the manuals says, so the thread comes off clockwise.

Most Bernies have an extra spool holder. It may be that your thread is meant to be standing? If you thread is cross-wound (most European threads are), it lays down. If the cone is larger at the bottom, it should spool so that the large part of the cone is toward the needle. If it is just wound around where the thread does not cross itself, you use the stand-up spool holder. If usually fits into a crack in the machine in the back top right. You also may have better luck with a free standing stand behind the machine. You may have a larger spool cap (some machines do), or you may need to use a net on your thread to keep it from spooling too fast and tangling if you have it in position and it is still doing this. You might have received little nets with your machine at purchase. You can also sometimes get them from florists as often flowers come in with them to keep the flowers from opening.

Next time you are at Joann's pick up a cone thread stand from the notions wall. They are cheap and will make your life alot easier. If you want a nicer thread stand, http://www.shoppersrule.com has one on their club special page for $36. NAYY I have it and really like that I can line up 10 colors on the numbered spots and never make a mistake unless I load the thread numbers in the wrong order. Either will keep what is happening to you from happening.

Thanks! There is a spot for an upright spool, but no stick and I only have one size of thread holder cap. (this is a used machine from the sister) so I think I will have to head over to the service place and see if I can pick up another stick and another cap plus see what they have for spool holders. I have lots of the little net bags, got a bunch with my serger and found some more in a drawer, I always wondered what they were for - good thing I'm becoming a pack rat!
