Total embroidery newbie here. I ordered some thread via a website, and with it came a freebie CD with some designs on it. I don't have a reader box yet (like Amazing) or any software. Is there a way I can just preview the designs on my computer? The CD has all the formats of most machines, but I don't know if any of my graphics software can be used to open any of them just for display on my monitor. I just want to see what I got for free. :)

How can I?

Thanks,
Maureen

You won't be able to see them without some type of software (unless there are jpgs on the CD as well). There are a few that are free from the internet.

My favorite (while not totally free) is Embird, which gives you a free 30 day trial. www.embird.com

Awwww Maureen, You need a program that will read the design extensions, (.sew, xxx, and so on) If you are new to embroidery and are planning on getting a box I recomend getting embird also. It's a program that lets you see the designs and manage them. You can also size, flip, size and merge them with other designs and save them as a totally different file. It also lets you change the formats so if you have a design that is not in your format you can change it to yours. It's easy to use. The best part of it is you can download a free trial of the program for 30 days or 100 uses which ever comes first. Then you can see what you have in your freebies. If you then want to buy it it's cheaper than most software programs that do less. The website is www.embird.com Secrets of Embroidery also has the download and I think it's cheaper also then on the embird site. Hope this helps

Also Maureen, There is no dumb questions. If there were we would all be asking dumb questions. We all started out just like you, you'll be an expert in no time if you are like the rest of us addicted sewholics.

Maureen, you didn't say which machine you have. A number of them come with the software required to open various formats. But, as others have said some sort of software is needed.
Have fun or don't do it, Tom

It's a Babylock Ellure (former model) that had those little PES format cards. It came with only 2 cards, and some built-in patterns. No software, no cables, no reader box.

Welcome mzappala

I have a Babylock Ellure (former model) ...I bought the baby lock palett'e...to go with it...it was not cheap ...$485.00 Canadian...
I'm sure there must be something out there that will work the same and alot cheaper ...then I bought embird to open up my pattern's.
