I just made my first rag quilt and I need help!!! I sewed my blocks into rows and then I sewed my rows together. Where the seams met I sewed one going one way and the next one going the opposite way. But after clipping the seams it looks funny. What is the correct way? |

I've never made one but someone else was looking into rag quilts earlier and I found some web-sites with instructions for rag quilts. Check them out in the previous post in the General Quilting thread. I've put the link below. Maybe someone else will have more advice. Good Luck. http://sew-whats-new.com/vb/showthread.php?t=17067&highlight=rag+quilt TTFN from

Can you give a bit more details about your quilt looking funny The only thing I can think about right now is the grain of the fabric on your blocs not facing the same direction. Also, have you washed you quilt yet? |

Annie emailed me last night. I did reply to her from home. I'm trying to picture this but having a hard time. Anybody????? ________________________ "Its hard to explain but I sewed solid squares and patterned squares. Its where the rows are sewn together you can see a small pattern strip on the solid square and a small solid strip on the pattern square. Do you understand? let me know thanks again " |

Hey, I think I figured it out.. She is talking about the seam allowances both showing on the right side of the quilt, I think.. this is the right thing, Anne.. After you do the clipping and wash and dry it, it will look right..If you think about what you have done, it will make sense to you.. I made my first one from Denim on top and flannel underneath, and when I sewed my seams both the fabrics showed in all the raw edges on top.. Makes the pretty fuzzy lines after you do the clipping and laundering, like I said above.. You are doing the right thing..

Dede, don't feel bad.. Been there, done that.. I used half a thread up one time on here, because I was reading .6 mm as 6 mm ( and could not understand why band would not fit) It took several days for that to sink in to me.. Sew With Love

Thanks everyone yes you are right the raw edges just look funny. But after washing and drying the raw edges are fuzzy so I guess they look alright. The baby I'm giving it to will not care Thanks so much |

After washing and drying, I used a soft brush on the frayed edges. It helped pull out lose threads.
