I was wanting to get some basic thread for my new sewing machine. Do I get cotton or polyester?

It is always best to match the thread to the fabric. However, if you are doing quilts, always cotton because it will wear more like your quilt (most quilts have cotton in them some place.)

Just getting started out there--It _is_ daunting! The racks of threads along can be overwhelming. Take it easy, enjoy the ride. Experiment some, and walk away with lessons learned, one by one. You'll get the hang of all of this. I do recommend either an adult ed class in your community (they're cheap) or a little mentoring from a friend/relative that has some experience and doesn't mind constant phone calls! Also, keep coming around here. Ask away! I think for starters, general purpose sewing--"All purpose" thread will be fine. You can specialize with your threads as you begin to specialize with your projects. Have fun!

When you purchase fabric, purchase the thread to match. It is not necessary to purchase hundreds of spools early...it isn't like embroidery. The colors of fabrics, tints and tones vary greatly from year to year and certainly from season to season. Just buy as you go. You'll still need the basic black, and white, but red tones and the others...just wait.

I use 100% cotton for quilting ( when using 100% cotton fabrics)
If you use a poly on a quilt, the poly threads will cut into the cotton fabrics.

and Poly or a poly blend when making clothing, as poly is stronger then cotton and will hold up for better for the use.

I would stay away from the cheap Wal-mart brands, coats and clarks will work find, for both quilting and clothing.
but I find that using a ploy Joann's thread for serger is just as good as the name brands (maxie-lock)

also a good bleander to buy is a gray and Natural it will just about match anything your working on. :)
