Anyone out there know where I can find a pattern for an adult sized Baptismal gown? Tried the usual pattern books to no avail and searched the net but only found gowns for sale. Our ladies group wishes to make some for our church. Thanks for any ideas. (I don't want to adapt a nightgown pattern unless I absolutely have to!) |

I think that they are in the costume portion of the big 4 pattern catalogs (at least they used to be.) I don't know what church you belong to, but when they decided our church needed gowns, they opted for a simple round necked jumpsuit with nylon zipper (about mid calf length). I thought it was more than a bit odd, but when they go down into the water, the gown doesn't float (which tends to be a problem with the dress type gown). You still have to be careful about what fabric you use because so much of it "disappears" when wet. pam

You might try something like a graduation gown/ judges gown too. Simple, everyone can wear one and you can make it out of anything.

Appreciate the responses. Hadn't thought of a jumpsuit, but I can see how they would not balloon out when one entered the water. If we stick with a gown type we'll have to weight the hems with something, I guess. I did try the "big four" pattern books - they used to have the patterns, but not now. I will look at grad gowns though - good idea. I have looked through all the costume patterns and might be able to adapt something...hmmmm. I wish 'fortrel" was still around - remember it? White fortrel could get soaking and nothing showed through (weighed a hundred pounds wet, though! ). Thanks. If you have any other ideas I'd appreciate your input. |

The jumpsuits that they made were longer in the crotch than we would normally make them and they were straight, not gathered, but generous in fit but not so generous that they would float. They work very well...just not what I had ever seen before. It is really nice because it protects the modesty of everyone.

Try ebay for the out of print patterns. My husband is a soon to be minister and that's where I got the two patterns for robes, both were out of print. Butterick 6765 is the nicest. Also, try http ://www.churchsew.com. They have an extensive resource list.I am always on the lookout for church related sewing sites, so let me know if you discover any good ones! |

Good tips so far. This thread makes me think of my baptism. My husband (then boyfriend, seven years ago) were baptised together in Lake Quinault in October! We wore regular clothes. Hadn't thought about a special gown. I am getting a giggle thinking of a baptism that turned peep-show if you weren't careful about fabric choices. see the mundane life of a housewife.
