I just made my first purse with a pocket. The pocket part got really confusing. Is there anywhere I could get some info on pockets? :bluesmile

It the pocket a patch pocket that is just a piece of fabric added to the purse or is it somehow part of the purse...like it is sewn at the side seams or suspended across the middle? If it is a patch pocket does it have rounded edges or are they square? Is it sewn all the way around with a zipper or other opening or is it open at the top or have a flap? What is ugly about it.

To keep a guide on my pocket, I sew a basting stitch all the way around the pocket as a guide and then I turn on the basting stitch. I have a straighter edge that way. If it is a rounded pocket, I pull the basting stitch just enough to make the rounded parts turn under and then I sew. My machine has a foot with a blade that is used for blind stitching. I often put that blade at the edge of the pocket and use it for a guide, letting it ride off the edge of the pocket so that I have a beautiful straight stitch all the way around. If I want a wider edge, I use the edge of my smallest foot. It is also possible to sew the pocket from the inside if it is large enough. I don't usually find that worth the trouble.

There are also pocket templates that can be purchased. Each corner of the template has a different size curve. These can be helpful for making pockets. You just place it in the pocket, turn your pocket over the curve and press.

Whatever else you do, be sure and press your pocket with the seams turned before you place it on your purse, it if is a patch pocket. Pressing is always the key to fine sewing. The other key is pinning the pocket in place before you start.

If you can get your hands on Sewing for Dummies, the second edition has on pg. 181 Unlined Patch Pockets with square corners. It seemed a little weird :whacky: but when I tried it out, it looked great! They also have information on curved pockets.
