Ever have one of those BLAHHHH days. I am just not motivated to do anything, not even sew!!! maybe I will go shopping But seriously, got any ideas for getting out of the sewing slump? Perhaps I will rearrange my fabric, that sometimes works. (I have things to do mind you, like pay bills, organize ye old tax file for the accountant etc etc but who wants to do that!!) Jeanette

I've been in a bit of a slump also and have tried starting a few different things. I deconstructed a dress to try and make a pattern from it. I have a lot of those fleece quilts to put together. I have rearranged my fabric and put some of my flannel on bolts. I go in there and walk around and try to decide what I'd like to do. I guess I don't really have any suggestions because I usually don't start a lot of things at once but have done exactly that this week. I'm looking for a lined jumper pattern and need to go and get one. Then I could do the jumpers that I bought material for. Let me know if you find the answer. |

Hello, I know exactly how you feel. There is no motivation to do any boring stuff, like cleaning the house, telling the children what to do or not to do, ... When I am in that mood, its getting better by looking in my pattern magazines (Burda magazine). It gives me new inspiration, I can think about clothing I need right now or what can be done later.I have about 120 magazines, collected over the years. They are under my sewingtable and when my family finds me there, sitting in complete silence and concentration, they know, its better not to disturb me Do what ever makes you feel better, we have every right to do so! Maybe you start by making you a cup of .... The best to you! Claudia |

Usually an afternoon of looking thru patterns or the newest sewing magazines gets me out of a slump. If that doesn't work, start the tax work. It will have you so bored and irritated, anything looks good.

You're right about the tax work Mary, especially when you can see from the start that you are going to end up owing the good ole U.S. Government several thousand dollars!!! Patsy Patsy

Chrys, I once left the tree up all year. Just couldn't get in the mood to take it down. I took mine down this year on the 26th. It was a tiny tree so it was no problem. When I get in that kind of mood I go shopping for something. Doesn't have to be sewing things just something. I always manage to hit the fabric dept before I leave the store. I have been having fabric to make bed pillows for my new bed and just can't seem to get it together to start. I still have the hem and buttons to put on my duster. By the time I put them on it will be summer again. I'm regressing back into my youth, I just have to figure out how I'm going to convience my body to come along with me.

By the way, usually I'm not tickled about doing my taxes because we always owe also but this year with the Hurricane I'm looking forward to it. I get to claim all my losses. At least I'll feel like I got some of my money back.

I've taken my tree down and my house is pretty much ship shape for now but I think I'm suffering from sewing burnout from the Christmas musical costumes. I have appliqued 2 sunbonnet blocks for the Quilt Guild swap, but can't get motivated to work on any really big projects at this point. My garment fabric stash is totally caling my name (i.e., blue suede for 3 piece; fabric for several skirts and tops, etc. ) but I keep ignoring it and wearing my corduroys, sweaters and socks. Hopefully my burnout will pass shortly or it will be spring and i still will be wearing corduroys, sweaters and socks. Patsy Patsy

Vikki - I can't relate to retirement yet but if I don't have a routine to my day I am lost! DD was off during the Christmas holiday (10 days) and even though it was great to spend it with her (I took vacation time while she was off) I couldn't wait for school to start again. The open ended days made it so hard to get things done since I could tell myself, "I'll do it later". I guess that's why I made Dean's List with an 18-credit nursing semester and barely got by when I had a 9-credit semester. Most of my parent's friends I know look forward to retirement and then says, "Now what do I do with myself?"
- Maureen.

Thanks Mary and thank Julie for me. Very good article and yes, it does inspire me to take time to just play with a couple of the machines sitting in my sewing room just taking up space at this point. Patsy Patsy
