Well, I'm slowly coming along with the jacket. DS tried it on today which was a trick being paperclipped together in spots. I have a small adjustment to do on the abrasion yoke piece, but so far its going well. I hope by the weekend to have the lining ready to tack in so we can do another try on, then I can do the final sewing of the yoke seams and side/sleeve seams. I think he likes it, you know how some guys can be, I keep asking cause he doesn't seem very excited about it - I guess that's just the way he is, he said he likes it, even after the third time I asked today!

Mary, the book you suggested on Outdoor clothing has been a blessing!! What a super book it has turned out to be!

If it was my son and the jacket is to be worn for something with the potential for injury -- such as snow boarding -- I would find some kind of lucky charm on quilters cotton or even just draw and cut a green four leaf clover or horseshoe shape and applique it to the lining before I put it in.
Just for mother's love.

What a great idea Dorothy! I think I will see if I can find a 4 leaf clover to embroider on the inside lining. There was a young man from here that went missing while snowboarding and they have just found his body. I am so thankful everytime these kids come back safe and sound and I feel so much for the family of this young man.

I must have missed reading this thread about the snowboarding jacket and Mary's recommendation of Rochelle Harper's "Sewing Outdoor Gear". I just looked it up at our library and it is in. I'm going to have a good browse first but will probably end up buying the book. My daughter is having trouble finding a really warm jacket for skating, toboganning etc.because they are all cut very straight and she needs more ease through the hip area. She mentioned that she(me) would probably have to make one to get a good fit. I didn't say much at the time because I wasn't sure about how to go about finding good patterns, instructions and warm fabrics. However, I am more hopeful now, and will do some quiet research before getting her hopes up with a definite committment. Thanks Mary et al.

Laura,
I have put good luck charms on some of the outfits I have made. I have gotten a lot of my ideas from Polynesian Tattoos. They have symbols like the Chinese symbols that mean protection from this or that. Just thought it might be something different for you to think about.

Today I battled for three hours trying to put the hood together, There were 2 outside pieces, and 4 inside pieces. The directions were hard to decipher, but I finally got it. He doesn't want a collar, he wants a hood instead, and this pattern has a collar with a detachable hood, so it's been a bit of creating as I go as I have to adjust the hood to fit the collar area and I can't finish off the front flaps or put snaps in until I get the zipper in and the front/back flaps on the jacket, and I'm still waiting for the zipper to arrive from Calgary since I couldn't find one here anywhere in the right length. I certainly picked myself a challenge with this. I'm still not sure how this is all going to come together taking out the collar, so I'm anxious to get the zipper. I can see it in my mind, but making it work on the fabric is another thing. Waterproof fabric is not very forgiving if you have to rip out and resew!!!

Ok! It's ready for him to try on so I can see how long the zipper should be. I did the pitzips, and the hood and lining is attached (at the neck). Tomorrow I'm taking it in to his place to try on, and for a bonus I get to see my adorable granddaughter. Will take the camera for a pic of him in the almost finished coat!!!
