I downloaded the trial version of Embird the other day and I love it. That is, when it's not locking up my computer!!!

I would say 9 out of 10 times, when I launch the program, my computer locks up immediately and I need to push the on/off switch on the hard drive to reboot it. ctr-alt-del doesn't even work. It has also seemed to slow down my Internet Explorer when I launch that application.

I've tried to launch Embird from both the icon on my desktop as well as from the start button on the taskbar. Same thing happens.

Should I de-install it and download it again from another site? I can't remember which site I downloaded it from. It could have been "secrets of embroidery" or it could have been the Embird home site. Or another site altogether. I just don't remember because I saw it in several places. I know, dumb mistake to not make note of which site it came from.

But I have McAfee running all the time. Should I run my spyware to inspect things?

Thanks for any advice.

I'm not sure how much RAM is advised to run Embird? I know it is a memory hog so I'd think you would need atleast 256RAM to make it run without locking up. I know they advise diabling anti-virus for installation so if I were you I'd uninstall it, redownload it, then disable the anti-virus when you install it, then turn the AV back on. That could be your whole problem. :)

McAfee always makes a problem on our computers...we never use it anymore.
We prefer Norton.
So you might try untinstalling both the McAfee and the Embird, try Embird without the McAfee...if it works...get Norton instead. It doesn't give you the blue screen of death...(ask me how many times McAfee did that to me before I told my husband to get rid of it OR don't let the door hit you in the b***).

I have tons of RAM. 256M, with like 70% of it free most times.

I used to have Norton and my husband didn't like it, that's why I went with McAfee. Actually, I just suggested to him the other day that we get rid of the McAfee and switch to a free software from our ISP that also includes some kid's policing type protection for the internet.

I already tried to deinstall the Embird, turn off McAfee and reinstall Embird. No change. It's quite frustrating!

I think I'm to the point where we need to get rid of Windows ME, as well as get a new computer. This one is from 2001. Not a real dinosoar, but certainly not the best it can be, especially for how much use it gets here!!!

Oh yes I would get rid of Window ME - there is a reason it left the shelves so quick & Microsoft quit selling it. As far as virus software we are another group that hates McAffe, such a system hog. If you don't like Norton either, then you might want to check out Computer Associates. My Engineer DH tried their virus software & loves it, put it on the kids computer! Several Gov't offices have gone to Computer Associates. It also ranked well with Consumer Reports. If you are looking for Spyware software we found that Microsoft really has a good free product right now, Consumer Reports & several others are ranking it as one of the better programs! :whacky: Recently when we decided it was time to upgrade the kids' computer from Windows 98SE, when you figured the cost of the operating software we decided you might as well get a new computer! But then again my techy DH likes to take all the old computers and play - so that might have been an excuse to have another old computer to play with Linux some more! :re:

Any graphics program requires a fast computer and a lot of ram. If your unit came with ME 2000 switching to XP will not help you it will slow your unit down even more. I just installed Embird on my unit and it runs great. I have worked with photo enhancing programs for years. It is all about speed. I sugest that you go to Dell.com and do some shopping. I found a refurbished unit that was built for graphics not games. It came with no sound boards. Gamers like their sound. Figure out what your buget can stand and buy the fastest unit that you can and rember. Software makes computers obsolete not time. If you never buy new software you will never have to replace your unit.

Maureen, 256RAM running Embird or other digitizing programs isn't alot of RAM it is just about the minimum you can do it with witout having constant lock-ups. I am getting ready to add another 256 to bring my Dell to it's max of 512 but what I really want to do is to get a laptop running atleast a gig of RAM in the next year or so. :)

I use a Toshiba laptop with the Artista program which is pretty demanding on the system. I've been in a lot of classes with Dell users and my Toshiba has not locked when theirs did. However, I don't know what they had on their computers, if they were running incompatable anti virus software or how old their computers were.

I have windows ME and dont' have a problem with Embird and had McAfee and had no problems with embird. Did you disable the spyware when you installed the program. I would close anything running in the backround while installing the program. If you have any other problems I'd contact tech support and ask them what could be causing the problem. I've had problems with software before and it was a tech issue and had to download a quick fix program from the vendors website to fix the problem. Let us know what you find out if anything.

Well, I deinstalled the McAfee, Spybot and Adaware. Then I downloaded a free protection suite from my ISP, which includes an anti virus, spyware protection, popup blockers, firewall and parental controls. I have some minor problems with the parental control blocking innane things like Ebay graphics, and some other pictures, but overall, I think the lockups are almost all gone. And the new software has some nifty features that I like a lot.

My Embird seems to be just fine. Thankfully, my computer doesn't lock up every time I run it. I'm down to about 1 lockup a day, instead of the 15-20 I had the other day!!!

More RAM!!! WoW! I thought I hit the jackpot when I increased it to 256 last year! I think when we bought the machine, it only had 128 and I thought that was more than I'd EVER need!!! LOL!!!

Thanks!

Sometimes I think the antivirus programs cause more problems and conflicts then the viruses themselves. ggggggggg NOT really but it sure gives us a lot of grief.

I realize I'm a bit late here... but I just wanted to put my 2 cents in... almost any graphics program or editing/digitizing program will be a RAM hog.... and yes, 256 is a bare minimum... I just upgraded on my laptop from 512 to 1 G... it does make it better... and the more you get into embroidery, the more programs you're likely to have, and hte more RAM you're likely to need quite frankly,.,, so you might as well bite the bullet and upgrade your RAM, it will save you headache and pounding the desk later... :throw: ask me how I know... :bluewink: :

hi
I would reinstall it again. close out all programs not in use. If you have a firewall , let it accept the program. go to embird site and read how to unstall and install you really need to do it right. or you will have problems. Its a great program.
