I've been thinking about machine knitting. I know there must be SOMEONE on this site who has knowledge to pass on I'm wondering about ease of use, cost, what one needs in a machine etc. THANKS!

I have an ancient knittting machine in the loft - has an 8 stitch repeat manual set stitches. I don't know if the punchcard ones are much better to use but this thing was impossible to change the tension on - made a very firm inflexible fabric and could not do rib so I used to do that by hand. I used to make a lot of clothes for small people with it but never met an adult who was happy with the results. I labouriously made a cabled cricket sweater for my husband with hand manouvering the cables every 8 rows. He did wear that for a long time but it never gave very satifactory results. It was the cheapest one you could get in the "80s, lets face it (not a bond that only does DK or chunky) If you want to go for it you should find one to try and see some examples of rib and so on - they must have come a long way since mine! And I would then see if you can buy one second hand 'cos they are not cheap and the resale value was very small... I used to clamp mine to the ironing board as you could adjust the heighht - tables are not always the right height foor your back. love and kisses, Jan
