My mom used to make knitted buttons with little white plastic rings that the wool was knit or wound around, does anyone know how to do this?? I found a few ideas for knit buttons, one by knitting a piece and wrapping it around a bead, another is making a knotted I-cord, but I'd really like to do this little ring ones if someone knows how?

I used to make these a lot -

Using a plastic ring first cover the ring itself by taking a long length of thread and blanket stitch around the edge tightly

Turn the button hole stitch so that the seam is on the inside of the ring leaving a smooth outer edge

catch one of the stitches and go across to the other side to make a bar across the central hole, fasten

weaving through the blanket stitch edge stitches make another bar at 90 degrees to the first

Now go 45 degrees around the rim and make another bar making the final bar at 90 degrees to that one

you should have an eight spokes to a wheel woven acrosss the center hole of your button.

Starting at the middle weave the thread in and out of the spokes until you have made a tight fabric in the middle of your button

leave a long thread to sew the button in place - you will sew over the center hub of the spokes.

You can make these with the main outer rim in one colour and the center in another if you are making matching buttons.

I always used to make these to match my childrens clothing

Practice, Laura, Practice!

Well, they do to me. LOL, but that is no guarantee they make sense. :bg: I think it would be fun making them.

They are fun and finish off a litle knitted cardy lovely. I sometimes make bobble buttons for very small persons.
These are harder to describe - wind a piece of yarn in a fugure of 8 around you finger and thumb a couple of times.
Fold this over on itself at the twist to make a nest.
Sew yarn over and through the centre to bind the wool tigether until you have a little ball.

I think I might have to make a sequence of photo to show what I mean.
Another project 'eh!

I understood them. So what are you doing now Jan, that you can't make those funky knitted human parts? Are you back to serging like a maniac?

I have been spinning and weaving. No knitting at the moment, as I'm taking a break from it. Trying to prevent carpel tunnel. I like to switch doing different crafts with my hands, as usually that means I use a different motion. Never had tennis elbow, but I heard it can be painful.

Nothing - I can't hold scissors and make them work after the osteopath has pulled my arms about but I am trusting this is only temporary. I have the GI tract to do after all, and an animal cell cushion.
Tony is away for a few days after the weekend so I am planning on getting my advent quilt top finished - it ground to a halt over Christmas. And I have my Young Apprentice coming round tomorrow to start her first Big Project. We are going to make a sampler quilt - she may only be 10 but she is good.
