I'd like to make a tutu for my dd to dance around the house in :). I've got an idea on how to do it. But was wondering if anyone has done it and how they did it? Especially the waistband and how much tulle did you use? Also, I've never worked with tulle before, anything I should know?

Thanks for any tips!!

There are many kinds, and all of them are a snap to make. You can get different effects by using coarser/finer tulle, different colors, and different lengths. My DD has one with a waistband made of stretch velvet, with a few layers of very fine tulle sewn on, which drapes and flows, giving a sort of fairy-in-the-forest look, and it's comfy :) She has another with 2 kinds of tulle in about 4 layers, each about 6 inches long and tightly gathered. This might be closer to the classic tutu look. You can achieve it with a hand-sewn (quick!) long running stitch along a long 6 or 8 inch wide strip of tulle (start with lengths that are the width of the bolt, and just keep adding more lengths to it until it's as long gathered as you desire). Gather by hand and sew onto wide elastic. The manufactured tutus do use extra wide elastic in many cases. I don't know where they get it. You could use 2 or 3 strips of 1 inch wide elastic--stretch and sew them onto a piece of fabric, then sew the tulle onto the fabric and sew a center back seam. Reinforce that back seam though, b/c it'll go through a lot of tugging!

I made one last year for my 3 yr old GD. I used squares of tulle or netting in different colors and sewed them onto a casing then put elastic in the casing and made it to fit her waist. When I sewed the squares on I picked up the centre of the netting and sewed it (the centre) onto the casing, so you got a jagged edge to the tutu, more fairy like. I put enough squares on it to make it very full.

I just sewed several layers of netting onto a grosgrain ribbon 1 inch wide for a waistband and trimmed the layers into different lengths.. Then I persuaded the girl's father to part with some of his stren. (that is the fishing line that looks like transparent string) I zigzagged over the stren and anchored it very securely at the joining of the ends where they met.. Makes the tutu stand up just like a prima ballerina's.. :bg: :bg: I forgot to say the longest length goes on the top layer and thats where you sew the stren.. :bg: :bg:

If you double the tulle so that there is a pocket at the hem, you can insert silk flowers or petals to "float" inside the hem of the skirt. I've also used sequins and paillettes (think thats how its spelled). My four-year-old is in to "bling" these days- the sparklier, the better!

Wow! I love the tips/ideas - maybe now I'll have the nerve to put together a tutu for my dd. lol
One question though - how much tulle/netting should I get to make a "full" tutu? She's a r-t-w 3T/4T. I'll be making squares and then stitching the center point onto the waist.
Thank you!!!!

Christy, I would be interested in your easy instructions for a tutu. I also am interested in making a tutu for my girls. I bought a McCall's pattern for this only to read on Patternreview.com that it has a lot of problems. I am a novice so this does me no good.

The nearest I ever got to this was to make a dressing up outfit for my girlie as a toddler. We lovingly called it "net-on-Knickers" I took a solid pair of pants and hand sewed petal shapes all around fairly low down. Another circle of petals - slightly longer - went a touch higher up the knicker. Then you are ready for row 3 - I think I used about 6 rows in all, overlapping them as I went - she loved those fairy knickers for many years!

MY baby is 8 months old. I have tulle for a tutu but don't know how. Please help. My email is <email address removed for privacy>. Also how do you do the twirl skirts with the lines up and down. With strips of fabric up and down. I am sorry if I don't explain myself right, I am a novice sewer. Thanks so much. One last thing if you don't mind sharing how to applique a top. I know nothing. Thanks.

For those of you with baby girls or toddler girls, I saw the cutest idea at a craft show. A lady sewed tiny tu-tus made of tulle around the middle of Onesie outfits. She added cute little ribbon roses or bows to the top part. Adorable.

a very easy method for making a play tutu was given in an old (out of print) Simplicity costume pattern. Take 3 yards of 72" net, cut into three sections (each 108"x 24"). Pin the layers together and 12" in from one long edge, sew a casing the length of the net. Insert elastic the measurement of the wearer's waist + 1". Stitch along the ends of the casing, catching in the elastic. Pin the ends of the net together overlapping edges 3/8" and restitch to reinforce. Turn the upper section over the lower section and wear! How easy is that?

I made one for my niece because she could only wear pink and black to dance and we couldnt find a black tutu or wrap anywhere.

I took netting and cut it double what I wanted the length down to be (she is 3 so I cut it 16" wide) and three times her waiste in length. depending on how full you would like it you repeat this (I wanted it very full so it would stand and I made it with 8layers or 4 cuts of material)

Then I sew the layers at the skinny end making a giant loop. After all of the layers are done I put a holding stitch through the middle where you are going to fold it in half...All of the layers are sewn together now in a giant loop.

After your hold stitch is in you can fold that in half resembling what you wanted as length for it now. Then I pin and sew about 3/4" around the top leaving a small 1" opening for me to slide my elastic into. Pull the elastic to size on your D and stitch it and finish the 1" hole. Tada, your little ballerina has a full fun and really easy once you do it a few times, TUTU!!

I will need to make one for my D here soon so I will take some pics of the process and post them......whenever I have time....HAHAHAHA :dave:

I attempted the tutu yesterday using the 6 inch strips, doubled the length wanted and tied around an elastic band. It is probably a little too fluffy for my tastes as it took forever for me to get it to look right. HOWEVER, Clara LOVED it! It couldn't get it off of her, and I guess since I made it for her, it was a success! Here's a couple of pics.........Thanks for the directions to all!!

Janet – love Clara’s tutu! I am going down the same path as you - tying the tulle (I have 3” ribbon) directly to some elastic so I am wondering if you can tell me what you did? Any special way of tying the tulle to the elastic? Any number of strips per inch you can recommend? Any tips you may have since you have already created your beauty? What to avoid/be sure to do???? Also, how many inches of elastic did you use for your daughter?

Christy (or anyoe who got the instructions from Christy) I’d love to take a look at your instructions, since they sound easy!! Would you mind sending them to <email address removed for privacy>? Thanks everyone!!!!

For those that asked, it was really just trial and error. I measured Clara's waist with the elastic and cut it about 2 inches shy of the actual measurement. Then I actually tied the strips to the elastic once I sewed it into a circle. My tulle was on the cardboard bolt thingy, and that measured about 6 inches, so I just cut on both sides to get the strips. Some of the time I tied 3 strips at once, and then filled in between with just one strip. It made the tutu a little too fluffy for my tastes, but Clara loved it and it is very cute. She had on a pair of black shorts underneath it, and you couldn't see them. I will probably loop the tulle next time (make a loop and put the ends through it around the elastic) so that the knots are all in the same place. I think that will be easier for straightening it out once it is on. That's all I got......GOOD LUCK!

I'm in the middle of making a tutu using 8 inch strips tied around an elastic loop. I can't believe how easy this is! I ran out of tulle, so had to run to the fabric store for some more. While I was there, I saw satin blanket binding tape in black and it dawned on me that that was what they were using on the ebay tutus! Cut a piece of elastic slightly smaller than your daughters waist. Sew ends together. Then cut 8" strips of tulle (just cut from selvage to selvage- you can always trim the length after you get it on your daughter). Cut several yards worth. BTW, I bought my tulle at Walmart for .99 a yard. Next, layer three strips of tulle, grab in the middle and loop around the elastic, pulling to form a knot. Repeat until you have filled the elastic. Then take the satin blanket binding tape and encase the elastic- I am leaving long pieces of satin ribbon on the ends to tie in a big bow. So easy! You can make several in an afternoon! Once you get started, you will figure this out. You can't go wrong!!

I wrote some notes on how some of you made your tutus, I really like the big fluffy looking ones. If any of you have easy instructions to give out, I'd sure appriciate it! Maybe even a shopping list of materials I need? Pictures too. Heehee, I will take anything! Thanks Gals!:dave:

Love the tutus!

Here is one I made a few years back for Halloween using the tie on the elastic technique. I also tied on some ribbon with flowers hanging on the end so you could occasionally see flowers floating within the tutu.

I used my handy dandy glue gun for the flowers around the waist.

Another tip is to use those elastic hairbands (the big ones) to tie the tulle onto. I believe they are made by Goodie. We have several play tutus that were whipped up in no time with absolutely no sewing involved.

As mentinon tying the tulle is one of the easiest ways to make a tutu I make lots this way then you can also add little flowers pearls etc to it for added touch!
You can also make them as fluffy and full as you want I use close to two big rolls around 100 yards. If doing by rolls it saves allot of time and dont need to sew .
Good luck on the tutus love the ones made so far

Christy, might I be able to get the tutu pattern from you? I know this thread started some time ago, so I hope I'm not too late...

By the way, I'm new here. Thanks so much.

Christy can PLEASE have the instructions also. I know i am LATE in posting. I just came across the site! Could you please send the instructions to <email address removed for privacy>. I wanted to do an easter basket for my god daughter and niece. I was thinking i could just put the tut's around the bottom of the easter basket so that it would look - Princess like. Then after easter they could have the tutu's for costumes or whatever. I HOPE I HAVE SPARKED THE IMAGINATION OF OTHERS!!

Thanks

Having just paid $46 for a ballet costume (recital in May, and I couldn't have made it anyway b/c there were 12 that had to match) I have a question... is this a ballet tutu or a play tutu? the ones the girls that were older had are quite stiff and stick straight out, the younger ones (like my daughters) were just yards of tulle gathered to wide elastic (no pattern or instructions really needed)more like a play style tutu
thanks!

Christy, I would love to have this pattern if you don't mind. Parker is totally into anything girly these days. She picked out the Zoe tutu at Elmo Makes Music last Friday and I couldn't pull her out of it all weekend! Thanks so much! My email address is <email address removed for privacy>

Thanks again!
