I am thinking of getting the white folding table from the Nancy's Notions website. I would also get the teflon coated cover so I could iron on it too. My dh has a tendency to burn the botton of the iron we use so I'd like to keep my second iron/ironing surface seperate from the general household. Has anyone used this table? I'm still using the corrugated cardboard but would like something that I can iron on, pin and cut plus be collapsible (sp?). Is 36" normal for a table height? I'm not tall by any means but it seems a little low.
Thank you for any advice!!
- Maureen.

I have one of the tables from Joann's with the ironing cover on it. I put down rotary mats when I am cutting. I have plenty of room so my table stays up all the time and I do all my ironing on it. I love it. I haven't unfolded my ironing board since I got it a year ago for Xmas.

My cutting table is at 40" tall, my ironing table/craft table is at 36". I am 5"9 1/2. I decided on the height by trying to work at my kitchen counter which is 36" and found my back got sore with bending over. I have a chair that I use for my ironing/craft table as it should be a bit taller, but I also use it with my sewing chair, so I need it at an inbetween height. You can always make it taller by - having a husband who welds and makes longer legs, or putting wooden blocks under it to get it to the right height.

I think that my cutting table is 39 inches. It is taller than 36 for sure. I have a gate leg table that is 42X74. It has a full size self healing mat and T square to match. The negative to a gate leg is that there is a lot of wasted space underneath, but there are many remedies to that. The advantage to a gate leg is not only do they knock down for storage, they are easy to move from room to room or place to place.

My cutting table is without a doubt the best single addition to my sewing room that I ever ever ever made! I've had it since 1992 and loved every moment of it.

The table mat is not only good for cutting, the grid is wonderful for drafting patterns. I use it constantly for large straight edge cutting like drapery where you only have measurments to deal with. Be sure and get the full size t-square to go with your mat!!!!!

36" is the standard height for American countertops and most tables... I believe the European standard is a little bit lower...

For the sake of your back, you will want a tall table. I did some looking at Horn and Roberts and the heights ranged from 34 to 36.25 inches. Mine is tall enough that I have to use a bar stool to sit at it. Measure your kitchen table and see how high it is. You'll be happiest if the table is about 3 inches taller.

I have the folding cutting table from JoAnn's. I also have the telfon ironing cover and the full size mat that goes over that. I love all of them. To me this is a good investment. The hard mat can be rolled and tied to keep out of the way if you need to fold the table up. I have used my rotary cutter on it for about a year now and it still works good. The telfon ironing pad is at times the most wonderful ironing cover I have. When doing something really big I can iron without moving it all over the place. It sure does beat using the dining room table for laying our material and patterns.

Hi Maureen,

Do you have a Hancock's Fabrics in your area? If so, watch their ad circulars for sales on this same exact table. I bought this same table from my Hancock's in Feb. '05 for $79.99 and saw it for $69.99 before Christmas. They list it fairly often, I've noticed. And there's no shipping which would be substantial as it's a heavy box. Assembly *is* required (but not difficult.) I'm pretty sure JoAnn's fabrics probably carry the same table but I don't have one in my area so can't say. But with their coupons they may have a better deal. If a local store is an option, then you'll get a better deal than mailorder. I used for years one of the corrugated tables with a cutting mat and was so in need of a "real" table. It had developed a "sway back" and wasn't the easiest to deal with. This table is great as the 2 ends fold down into a small thing if you can't leave it set up all the time. I just use one of the larger Olfa cutting mats when I'm actually rotary cutting and then use the plain top for everything else. Don't get me wrong, I love Nancy's Notions, but you can do better on this table. The same table is around $150-160 in Clotilde's catalog--ouch!!

I also have the Joann's cutting table at 36" tall. I'm only 5 ft 1 in, so to me it seems a little taller than I'm comfortable with. I can't quite reach (across the width) to the other side when I'm laying out fabric or cutting it. It would be easier for me if it was 1" shorter-I'm certainly not growing any taller anymore! LOL :bg: However, I wouldn't part with it for anything-next to a sewing machine, it's been the best investment yet in my sewing escapades!

I agree with LadySloPokes re height. I am 5' and have tried cutting on my kitchen counter and, when I took classes at the local quilting shop, their cutting table also was way too tall for me. I wasn't able to put pressure on my rulers so that they wouldn't move when I cut. I am using a 24"w x 48"l x28" high table with folding legs that I bought at a local hardware store for $36 Cdn. It works for me...without any back issues although I only sew for a couple of hours at a time. My sewing table is an old office desk.. 30"w x 50"l x 30" h. That would be a better height...but I have the two permanently setup back to back in the centre of in my smallest bedroom. This arrangement gives me one huge table to hold my quilt when I am machine quilting.

I guess I'll check around some more since many of you ladies (& gents) have a "JoAnne" table and love it. Thank you very much for the input!!
We just put the down payment on our house in Ft. Myers  so I may have to wait until after we move. My dh would get a little crazed if I got the table now ( :bang: - one more thing to fit in the trailer). There just seems to be soooo much more than the last time I moved.
There's a large JoAnnes about 20 minutes away from the new house. There isn't much in my present hometown so it's on the list for when we get to FL. I'll just make do for now.
I'm trying to make the deal that if he get's the garage for his "toys" I get the 4th bedroom for my sewing room........

That sounds like a wonderful deal to me. Once you have the garage deal worked out, maybe you could tell him that you'll give up the master bedroom for the fourth bedroom as a sewing room if he'll let you have a cutting table?

Indoor playroom for you and outdoor playroom for him--sounds like a plan to me! I think I have finally found a way to get pics on here, and one of them is of the cutting table...let's see if I can get this to work. Let me know if the link is wrong.

Amazing the link worked since I work at the State offices and they block EVERYTHING! It must be such a pleasure to have a kitchen big enough that it's also your sewing "room".
I'm already trying to re-arrange things in the soon-to-be-house (it's not even built yet) so I can get my dh to spend most of his time out of it. I guess I'm a bit of a control freak and want the house the way I want it. He's admitted that he can live in a hole if he had to, not me. My idea of camping is not having hair dryer and curling iron!

I took a look at the Nancy's Notions website to see what kind of table they have. If I'm looking at the same one you're considering (Home Hobby Craft Table), that is the EXACT same table that Joann's sells!!! Same dimensions, same construction...everything!! Joann's does have a much better price too--on sale you can get it for $59.99. It's called "Joann Essentials Ultra Cutting Table". You might not be able to order it online through their website, but it's a pretty popular item in their stores. The ironing cover is cheaper too- about $29.99 regular price, I got mine for $19.99. I hope this will be some more help to you! :bg:

They call it an architech's desk lamp. It has a magnifier lens in the center of it, and it swivels all the way around and goes up and down. We found it on sale at a freight/tool clearance store for about $30 I think. My eye sight is so bad I was having trouble seeing to thread needles and seam ripping my ooppssiieess! :re: It also augments the lighting in the kitchen and takes away shadows created by the machine too.

Joann's has the table in their store for $99.00. I'm on their mailing list so I'll keep looking in their flyers to see if it goes on sale or if there's a coupon I could apply it to. I know it can be purchased for less so I'll be patient.

I was down at Joann's yesterday, ( in texas)
and they had the same cutting table that Nancy's Notions is selling for..

for $69. and something cents. on sale from $99. and something cents.

It did look nice, and I have been thinking about getting a bigger cutting table.. but the one at Joann's is just to short for me.. I would like something taller..

You can always fill fruit or tuna cans with sand or plaster of paris and set the table legs in those (after it dries).

mine, handy LOL

I have been doing some brain storming... and found a few online that may work, but one I liked the best had a price tag of $2000.00 so that is out LOL

so I have been thinking about buying two kitchen cabinets.. but woudl be too big for our kitchen, and make a drop table..
I really need something since I am very limited on room, that can be folded out made out of wood, that is tall with casters!

that can also be used as kitchen storage
about.com has a cuting table that may work.. maybe I can build one myself LOL

I am sure I will find something that will work, I just have to look around in stores and get some ideas.

There is a really cool modular unit out there. I also like the Koala Treasure Chest but it is not very long. My drop leaf table has served me quite well. It is narrow enough to get through doorways and extra long when it is spread out. You can lay out a lot of things without having to move much when you have a cutting space 2 yards long!

A lady who comes into our store quite often is very tall about 6'6". Her hubby bought her the table and he modified the bottom of it so it is taller. He took the rollers off, added wood to the bottom till it was the height she liked and then put the rollers back on. Well he really bought new rollers, but she said it works great, no problems at all. Just and idea, may be more work than worth it. One thing I did before was to buy sheets of wood, have them cut donw to the sizes I wanted by the heardware store. Bought some door hinges, attached the three piece of wood to the door hinges, and added legs. Sand and either prime and paint of varnish. Now this was about 25 years ago that I did it, still have the table in the basement as a folding laundry table. Might be an idea, just finding legs tall enough for you might be the problem.

the Koala Treasure Chest is something that i am looking for..
but I also have to store cookie sheets, and other baking pans in it.. while serving as a cutting area also..

I will send links once I find the two web sites again.

summer, that is a good idea, now If I can only work out how to make the legs pull in and out, I would make one like you said.. of coarse I would needs storage too LOL

Hi Maureen, I also have the table from Joann's and I love it. It is easy to move around and as you know both sides go down so it is only a few inches to store up against a wall if need be. I got a good deal on it, bought on sale with a coupon. I love it!

I can't remember who it was here that needed a taller table but wanted to let her know that before I bought this I was using a large wood folding (like you see in church hall) but it was too low. MY DH bought PVC pipe at home depot and cut it in lenghts to raise to right height for me, and slipped the legs into pipe. Worked great until I could get this one. Since I don't have alot of room it was rather bulky in my home, but it worked. I understand you can also buy lightweight tables at home depot or lowes and do the same thing. Hope this helps.

Mozeyrn, I just wanted to let you know that the Joann's cutting table is on sale this week according to their store flyer in our area. I don't know if you're able to get it now, or if it's available at the sale price in your area. When I saw the flyer, I immediately thought of you... hope it works out for you! :bluewink:

Thank you very much for your thoughts!!! :bg:
It's not that big of a box anyhow so my dh shouldn't mind if we have to add one more teensy weensy box to our trailer when we move. Of course, for a change, the construction of the house is AHEAD of schedule.

You can always go to Lowes or Home Depot, get those screw on wooden legs and casters. (they have a little metal plate you screw onto the table top the legs screw into that. ) The legs come in all sizes from 2" to 21" and styles. (Queen Anne, modern, shaker, etc) You can also get the table tops in square, rectangle and round. Make your own.. I do. You can paint or
stain'em they're all solid wood. (they used to make those put together furniture pieces back in the 70's and 80's. We had solid walnut pieces, till the movers 'lost' all the table tops, but NOT the legs and casters... :nc:
I love Lowes and HomeDepot...the also sell wood furniture in some of the stores.

I am planning my sewing room which will be ready in early March (as soon as my electrician installs new wiring for all the outlets I'll be needing). I have a large table top similar to the Joanns one you are all loving but I only have a regular ironing board. What is the Joanns ironing table topper?? I searched their site and couldn't find it. Is it a separate board that goes over this table or is it the heat resist fabric that goes on top? Does it cover the whole table? Elastic edges? Sounds like something I need to go with the Conair iron I ought to get too! I don't have a Joann's store here but I can probably make it myself if I know what it is.
